-는다기에: Because They Say… — Reported Claim As Reason

Connective: because of a quoted statement (-는다) + reason -기에.

Before this, make sure you know: -기에 , -자기에 , -아요 / -어요

How to form it

When Form Example
Verb + -는다기에 / -ㄴ다기에 -는다기에 온다기에 / 간다기에 / 먹는다기에
Adjective + -다기에 -다기에 좋다기에 / 바쁘다기에
Full paraphrase -다고 하기에 온다고 하기에

-는다기에 means because they say… — the reported claim is the reason.

Why this is hard

It pairs with -자기에 — because we decided to…. Here the reason is a statement or report: because someone said X. Learners miss the quote flavour and read bare cause.

What it does

You take a reported claim as the reason for your action.

비가 온다고 해서 — 온다기에 우산을 가져왔어요.
맛있다기에 가 봤어요.
쉽다기에 시작했어요.
싸다고 해서 — 싸다기에 샀어요.

Forms

Report ending material + -기에 — classroom -는다기에 and kin.

When not to use it

Do not use it for a let’s decision reason — that is -자기에. Do not drop the reported-claim flavour. Do not treat it as plain -기에 without speech.

Neighbours — and why they differ

FormWhy it is not this slot
-자기에Because we decided to — propositive reason.
-으니까Spoken reason — no report needed.
-는다고Says that — report without the reason -기에.

Shopping and travel decisions often ride hearsay: I went because they said it was good. Keep the speaker of the claim in mind.

Classroom examples should keep the meaning concrete: one clear scene beats three vague glosses. If a neighbour form already says the same thing more lightly, prefer the lighter tool unless register demands this one.

Ask: is the reason ‘because someone said…’? If yes, -는다기에. If the reason is a let’s plan, use -자기에.

Do not confuse it with
