-는다고①

-는다고①: Quoting What Someone Said

Indirect quotation of a declarative: …다고 하다 / 말하다, etc.

Before this, make sure you know: -아요 / -어요 , -았-/-었- , 이다

How to form it

When Form Example
Verb -는다고 / -ㄴ다고 간다고 / 먹는다고
Adjective -다고 좋다고 / 바쁘다고
With 하다 -다고 하다 온다고 해요 / 바쁘다고 했어요

-는다고① is basic reported speech for statements: they said that….

Gloss: quoting what someone said — the plain reported statement. 우리말샘 -다고 in indirect quotes (adjectives explicitly; verbs use the -ㄴ다/-는다 statement shape + 고). Courses drill -다고 하다.

What it does — carry someone else’s claim

You are not asserting the content as your own bare fact. You are packaging it as speech.

친구가 내일 온다고 했어요.
예약이 가능하다고 해요.
비가 온다고 하더라고요.
그 호텔이 조용하다고 했어요.

Schedule talk:

비행기가 지연된다고 문자가 왔어요.
가이드가 일찍 모인다고 했어요.

English “they said that…” is the right speech act. The Korean detail is the form split, not the idea of quoting.

What this page is not

  • Questions / commands in quotation use other endings — do not stretch statement -다고 to cover them.
  • ② (-는다고②) is the same morphology in another sentence seat (heard that…, said… so I…). Learn ① forms first.
  • Bare -고 (-고) is “and,” not “said that.”

When to use — and how far to trust it

Use it whenever you relay a plain statement: plans, prices, weather reports from a person, hotel reviews told to you.

Name the source when it matters (친구가…, 문자가…). The ending marks quotation; it does not prove the content is true.

Move to ② practice once final …다고 해요 is automatic and you start hearing quotes before 듣다 / 해서 / 생각하다.

Practice rule: if the original line was a plain statement you could end with 다/요, report it with -는다고/-다고 하다. If it was a question or command, stop — different toolkit.

Do not confuse it with
