In Korean, the fundamental physical motion verbs 가다 (to go — movement away from the reference point) and 오다 (to come — movement toward the reference point) undergo a breathtaking grammatical transformation when attached as auxiliary verbs after -아/어.

Rather than describing physical footsteps, they become aspectual time vectors (시간적 지향성). They allow speakers to depict how a situation, habit, or natural process travels across time:

$\begin{aligned} \text{Verb} + \textbf{-아/어 가다} &\longrightarrow \textbf{Moving Onward / Toward the Future / Approaching Completion} \ \text{Verb} + \textbf{-아/어 오다} &\longrightarrow \textbf{Accumulating From the Past / Continuing Up to the Present} \end{aligned}$$

1. Vector 1: ‘-어 가다’ — The Onward Journey Toward Completion

When you say an action is -어 가다, you indicate that the process is dynamically sliding forward along a trajectory toward an eventual endpoint or future reality:

1. Approaching Completion or Deadlines

준비하던 축제 기획안이 이제 거의 마무리되어 갑니다.
The festival proposal we have been preparing is now nearly reaching completion.
(The drafting is advancing along the timeline toward the 100% finish line).

복잡했던 지하철 공사가 드디어 끝나 가네요.
The complicated subway construction is finally wrapping up / coming to an end.

여름휴가 시즌이 다가오면서 도시가 점점 한산해져 갑니다.
As the summer vacation season approaches, the city is gradually growing deserted.

2. Natural Aging, Fading, or Transformation

Processes that unfold inevitably over time:

사람은 누구나 세월의 흐름에 따라 조금씩 늙어 가기 마련이다.
Every human being is bound to gradually grow old little by little with the flow of time.

어린 시절의 가슴 아픈 기억도 시간이 흐르면서 점차 잊혀 가더군요.
Painful childhood memories also gradually faded away as time passed.

2. Vector 2: ‘-어 오다’ — The Cumulative Journey Toward Now

When you say an action is -어 오다, you stand at the present moment and look backward down the road of history, certifying that a state, habit, or commitment has been steadfastly maintained and carried all the way to this very room:

1. Cherished Traditions, Identity, and Perseverance

우리 가문은 4대째 가업으로 도자기를 빚어 왔습니다.
Our family has crafted ceramics as a family business for four generations up to now.

지금까지 묵묵히 온갖 역경을 견뎌 온 여러분 모두가 진정한 승자입니다.
All of you who have silently endured all kinds of adversity up to this moment are the true winners.

한국 문학은 오랜 세월 동안 고유의 정서와 얼을 소중히 지켜 왔습니다.
Korean literature has treasured and protected its unique sentiment and spirit across long eras up to now.

2. Life History & Personal Journey (살아오다)

The compound verb 살아오다 is one of the most culturally profound words in the Korean language:

제가 지금까지 살아오면서 가장 중요하게 여긴 가치는 바로 정직입니다.
The value that I have regarded as most paramount throughout my life journey up to now is honesty.

그동안 앞만 보고 쉼 없이 달려왔으니 이제는 잠시 숨을 고를 때입니다.
Since I have run relentlessly looking only forward up to now, it is time to catch my breath for a moment.

4. Spacing Rules & Orthography

Under the National Institute of Korean Language (국립국어원) orthography guidelines:

  • Standard Rule: Main verbs and auxiliary verbs are separated by a space:
    • 끝나 가다 (O), 살아 오다 (O), 되어 가다 (O).
  • Permissible Exception (허용 규정): When connected by -아/어, writing them without a space is also officially permitted:
    • 끝나가다 (O), 살아오다 (O), 되어가다 (O).
  • In high-frequency idioms like 살아오다 and 다가오다, writing them as a single word is overwhelmingly the standard in modern print.

5. Summary Diagnostic Checklist

When choosing between -어 가다 and -어 오다:

  1. Is the action or season sliding forward toward a future conclusion? Use -어 가다 (e.g., 끝나 가다, 되어 가다, 밝아 가다).
  2. Has the habit, tradition, or endurance accumulated from the past up to today? Use -어 오다 (e.g., 지켜 오다, 발전해 오다, 살아오다).
  3. Do you simply want to state what is happening at this second without trajectory? Use standard -고 있다.
  4. Is it physical walking? Verify the destination relative to the speaker: walking away $ \rightarrow$ 걸어가다; walking toward here $ \rightarrow$ 걸어오다.

Common questions

Does -어 가다/오다 always involve physical walking?

Not at all! While they can describe physical motion when paired with movement verbs (걸어가다 = walk away; 걸어오다 = walk toward here), their most profound intermediate and advanced role is metaphorical aspect: describing the temporal trajectory of abstract processes (발전해 오다 = has developed over time; 잊혀 가다 = is fading from memory).

What is the difference between '된다' and '되어 가다'?

된다 bluntly states the factual completion or change of state ('It becomes / It's done'). 되어 가다 paints the gradual, organic unfolding of the process: '일이 잘 되어 가요' (Things are coming along nicely / progressing smoothly toward success).

Can -어 가다 and -어 오다 attach to adjectives?

Directly, they typically pair with verbs or verbs derived from adjectives via -어지다: '밝아 오다' (the dawn is breaking / growing bright toward us), '어두워 가다' (it is growing darker and darker into the night). Some set adjective compounds also exist: '더워 오다' (heat creeping in).

Can -어 오다 be used with future tense?

No. Because -어 오다 requires an action to have originated in the past and accumulated toward the present anchor, it cannot project into the unknown future (*내일부터 발전해 올 것이다 X). For future continuation, use -어 갈 것이다 (We will continue to advance onward).
