-어지다
-어지다: Becoming — When an Adjective Turns Into Change
Auxiliary: become [adjective] — a change into that state (and related -어지다 layers on verbs).
How to form it
| When | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Adjective, ㅏ/ㅗ stem | -아지다 | 작다 → 작아지다 |
| Adjective, other stems | -어지다 | 크다 → 커지다 / 춥다 → 추워지다 |
| 하다 adjectives | -해지다 | 건강하다 → 건강해지다 |
| Polite present | -아/어져요 | 건강해져요 / 추워져요 |
-어지다 (and -아지다, -해지다) is how Korean turns a state word into a change of state: not is cold, but gets cold; not is healthy, but becomes healthy.
The Sejong intermediate unit title says it out loud: 꾸준히 운동을 하면 건강해져요 — if you keep exercising, you get healthy. That -해져요 is this grammar.
우리말샘 lists several 지다 auxiliary senses. The classroom focus here is the adjective reading: enter the state named by the front word. Verb readings (passive / come-to-do) share the shape — do not smash them into one English gloss.
Forms
Same -아/어- family as -아서 / -어서:
작다 → 작아지다 get smaller
크다 → 커지다 get bigger
춥다 → 추워지다 get cold
어렵다 → 어려워지다 get difficult
건강하다 → 건강해지다 get healthy
Polite speech:
날씨가 추워져요.
한국어가 점점 쉬워져요.
운동하면 건강해져요.
-어지다 vs -게 되다
-게 되다 often frames a situation you end up in (come to…, it turns out that…). -어지다 on adjectives is about the property changing.
한국어가 쉬워졌어요. Korean got easier. (state change)
한국에서 살게 됐어요. I came to live in Korea. (life situation)
You can invent contexts where both feel possible. Start with the unit’s picture: adjective → process of becoming that.
Not the same as -고 있다
-고 있다 holds a progressive or result in place. -어지다 tracks the change itself.
문이 열려 있어요. The door is open (result sitting there).
날씨가 추워져요. The weather is getting cold (change underway).
Condition + change
The unit pairs naturally with -으면:
꾸준히 운동을 하면 건강해져요.
매일 읽으면 실력이 늘어요 — and with -어지다: 실력이 좋아져요.
First clause: condition. Second: the state that arrives.
Learner traps
- *건강하여지다 — say 건강해지다.
- Treating every English become as -게 되다 only — miss 추워지다, 바빠지다.
- Past on the wrong piece — *추웠어지다 → 추워졌다/추워졌어요.
Ask: am I saying a quality is changing into place? If yes, -아/어지다. If you mean “I ended up in a situation,” check -게 되다 first.
Do not confuse it with

On the jabi learning path, this appears in 꾸준히 운동을 하면 건강해져요 (If you exercise regularly, you will become healthy.) — Intermediate Korean 1, Unit 4, on the theme of self-development. These come with it:

Common questions
Is every -어지다 ‘become’?
No. On verbs, 우리말샘 also lists passive (‘undergo’) and ‘come to do’ readings. This Sejong unit’s title sense is the adjective state-change layer (건강해져요).
Can I say 문이 열려지다?
You will hear related passives; do not treat them as the same lesson as 날씨가 추워지다. State change ≠ every verb+지다.
What about 커지다 vs 커지다 spelling?
크다 → 커지다 (not *크아지다). Harmony follows the compressed stem.
Does -어졌어요 need past on the adjective?
No. Change is carried by 지다: 추워졌어요, not *추웠어지다.
