-는다고②

-는다고②: Quoting in Another Sentence Seat

Same quotation morphology as ①, used in a different syntactic seat (embedded / non-final).

Before this, make sure you know: -는다고① , -아요 / -어요

How to form it

When Form Example
Embedded complement -는다고 / -다고 + verb 온다고 들었어요 / 좋다고 생각해요
Mid-clause quote -다고 … 늦는다고 해서 기다렸어요

-는다고② is not a new ending. It is the same quotation morphology as -는다고①, noticed when the quote does not sit as a neat sentence-final …다고 해요.

Curriculum gloss: quoting, in a different sentence position. Sejong splits ①/② by seat, not by inventing fresh Hangul.

What “different seat” means

In ① drills, the quote often is the report:

온다고 해요.
좋다고 했어요.

In ② territory, the quote is food for another verb — hear, think, decide, wait because…

그 숙소가 좋다고 들었어요.
친구가 늦는다고 해서 기다렸어요.
가격이 오른다고 하네요.
예약이 안 된다고 문자가 왔어요.
좋다고 생각해요.

Same -다고. Different host. Learners who only practised final …다고 해요 freeze when the quote appears mid-chain.

Why the split exists pedagogically

Morphology does not change: verbs still use -는다고/-ㄴ다고, adjectives -다고. What changes is reading skill — you must hold the quoted clause open until the outer verb arrives.

온다고 해요. ①-style report close
온다고 들었어요. embed under 듣다
온다고 해서 계획을 바꿨어요. quote as reason mid-chain

If you parse 온다고 as a finished sentence every time, mid-clause quotes will feel like broken Korean. They are not.

Noun quotes still belong with 이라고 / related tools — do not force bare -는다고 onto a naked noun.

When you are “in ②”

You are in ② whenever -다고 is followed by something other than a simple closing 하다/말하다 report — especially 듣다, 생각하다, 해서, 그래요 chains, messages, and “so I…” follow-ups.

Stay with ① practice until the forms are automatic; ② is recognition and flexibility, not a second conjugation table.

Practice rule: if you can wrap the quote in brackets — I heard [that…] / because [they said…] — and the brackets are not the whole sentence, you are looking at ②’s seat.

Common questions

Why two slots?

Sejong splits ①/②. Gloss for ② is position. Treat ① as the basic report pattern; ② as quotes living inside larger sentences.

New endings?

No new morphology required — recognition of seat is the point.

vs -이라고?

irago handles many noun quotes. Verb/adjective statements stay in -다고.
