-기만 하다
-기만 하다: Only Does… — Limiting the Action
Construction: nominal -기 + 만 + 하다 — does only that action (and little else).
How to form it
| When | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Verb + -기만 하다 | -기만 하다 | 먹기만 하다 / 놀기만 하다 / 듣기만 하다 |
| With tense / endings | -기만 했어요 / -기만 한다 | 보기만 했어요 / 말하기만 한다 |
-기만 하다 means only does… / just keeps …-ing — the action is limited to that.
Why this is hard
It can sound like complaint: they only complain, they only play. Learners confuse it with soft ‘just’ politeness. Limitation (and often frustration) is the job.
What it does
You narrow the action to one thing — and often imply that is not enough.
울기만 해요.
말만 하기만 해요.
놀기만 했어요.
걱정만 하기만 하지 말고 해 봐요.
Forms
Verb + -기만 하다. Related N만 patterns exist; keep the -기만 하다 chunk clear.
When not to use it
Do not use it as a gentle softener like English ‘just’. Do not confuse it with -만 하다 ‘about the size of’. Do not use it when multiple actions are equally in focus.
Neighbours — and why they differ
| Form | Why it is not this slot |
|---|---|
| 뿐 | Only / nothing but — different attachment. |
| -고 싶다 | Want to — desire, not limitation. |
| -기가 쉽다 | Prone to — tendency, not ‘only does’. |
Complaint and disappointment ride along for free. Parents, teachers, and tired friends use it when one action crowds out everything else. Soft English “just” is a false friend — Korean -기만 하다 narrows and often judges.
Ask: am I saying they only do that (often with complaint)? If yes, -기만 하다. If you mean ‘prone to,’ use -기가 쉽다.

Common questions
Dictionary?
Educational build: -기 + particle 만 + 하다. Limits the action to that verb. Not the adjective 만하다 (-을 만하다).
Vs particle 만 alone?
만 can limit nouns (밥만). -기만 하다 limits the action itself (먹기만).
Vs -을 만하다?
Huge trap. 볼 만하다 ≈ worth seeing. 보기만 하다 ≈ only looks (doesn’t buy, etc.).
Complaint tone?
Often yes — 공부하기만 하고 운동은 안 해.
