-게 생겼다: Have Ended Up Badly — Negative Predicament

Auxiliary pattern 생기다 「005」: with -게 생기다 in past-complete colour — the situation has become a negative predicament.

Before this, make sure you know: -아요 / -어요 , -았-/-었-

How to form it

When Form Example
Verb / adjective + -게 생겼다 -게 생겼다 큰일 나게 생겼다 / 못 가게 생겼다 / 망하게 생겼다
Present colour (rarer teaching) -게 생긴다 큰일 나게 생긴다

-게 생겼다 means have ended up (badly)… — a negative predicament.

Despite 생기다’s many senses, this classroom chunk marks landing in an unwanted situation: you’re stuck with it now.

Why this is hard

생기다 also means to come into being / to look like. Learners hear 잘생기다 and then misread -게 생겼다 as appearance. Here the job is predicament, usually bleak.

It neighbours -게 마련이다. Natural tendency ≠ “I’ve ended up in this mess.”

What it does

You name the bad spot you (or someone) are in.

늦기만 하게 생겼어요.
혼나게 생겼어요.
돈을 다 쓰게 생겼어요.
시험에서 떨어지게 생겼어요.

Forms

Stem + -게 생겼다 (past 생겼- is the common report of the state you are in).

When not to use it

Do not use it for cheerful “turned out great” stories without checking tone — the taught chunk leans negative.

Do not confuse it with appearance 생기다.

Do not swap it with -기 마련이다 (bound to happen in general).

Neighbours — and why they differ

FormWhy it is not this slot
-게 마련이다Natural tendency; not a personal mess you landed in.
-어 버리다Completion with emotion; different shape.
-는데도Contrast even though; not predicament.

Ask: have I ended up in a bad spot? If yes, -게 생겼다. If you mean ‘that’s how things naturally go,’ use -기 마련이다.

Do not confuse it with
