-을 테면
-을 테면: If You Are Going To… — Condition On A Plan
Connective from 터: if one intends / is going to do X, then…
How to form it
| When | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Verb + -(으)ㄹ 테면 | -(으)ㄹ 테면 | 갈 테면 / 할 테면 / 먹을 테면 |
-을 테면 means if you are going to… — setting a condition for a plan.
Why this is hard
It assumes an intended course and then attaches advice or a counter-move. Learners mix it with plain -으면. The 테 keeps the ‘you’re planning to’ flavour.
What it does
You take someone’s planned action as the if-clause, then say what should follow.
갈 테면 일찍 가요.
할 테면 제대로 해요.
먹을 테면 지금 먹어요.
말릴 테면 지금 말려요.
Forms
Prospective -을 테면.
When not to use it
Do not use it as bare if without plan flavour. Do not confuse it with -을 테다 expectation alone. Do not attach it to states with no intended action.
Neighbours — and why they differ
| Form | Why it is not this slot |
|---|---|
| -으면 | Plain if — broader. |
| -을 테다 | Strong expectation — not the if-plan frame. |
| -을 테지만 | Will, but — expectation + contrast. |
Coaching and challenge lines love this frame. Tone can sound pushy — soften upward.
Classroom examples should keep the meaning concrete: one clear scene beats three vague glosses. If a neighbour form already says the same thing more lightly, prefer the lighter tool unless register demands this one.
Ask: am I saying ‘if you’re going to do X, then…’? If yes, -을 테면. If you need plain if, use -으면.

Quick check
No sign-up, no score saved — just see if it stuck.
1. A friend is clearly about to leave, and you want the advice to ride on that plan — not a bare if. Which line?

2. Which line uses the forms-table shape 먹을 테면 on 먹다?

3. Same stem 하다 — which is ‘if that’s the plan…’, not firm will and not ‘will, but’?
