-기에 따라
-기에 따라: Depending On… — Outcome Changes With X
Connective from 따르다: after -기에, marks that what follows depends on the named factor.
How to form it
| When | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Verb + -기에 따라 | -기에 따라 | 하기에 따라 / 생각하기에 따라 |
| With 서 | -기에 따라서 | 하기에 따라서 |
-기에 따라 means depending on… — the outcome changes with the condition you name.
Why this is hard
It looks like reason -기에 plus 따라. Learners then mix it with occasion particle 따라 — 오늘따라 — and with noun 에 따라. This slot is condition → changing result, not “of all days,” and not bare-noun 에 따라 without the -기 package.
What it does
You say the result is not fixed; it varies with how or under what condition something is done.
노력하기에 따라 결과가 달라요.
마음에 따라 선택이 바뀌어요.
생각하기에 따라 달라요.
준비하기에 따라 쉬울 수도 있어요.
Forms
Verb + -기에 따라. The noun neighbour is 에 따라.
When not to use it
Do not read it as 오늘따라 occasion colour. Do not drop -기 and invent bare 따라 for method. Do not use it when the outcome never varies at all.
Neighbours — and why they differ
| Form | Why it is not this slot |
|---|---|
| 따라 | Occasion of all days — different job. |
| 에 따라 | Noun + 에 따라 depending on. |
| -기 나름이다 | Depends on how/who — near twin. |
Classroom pairs often refuse a locked fate sentence with this frame: show two different outcomes under two conditions.
Ask: does the outcome change with that condition? If yes, -기에 따라. If you mean ‘today of all days,’ use occasion 따라.
