-기

-: The Plain Verb-to-Noun Ending

Makes a verb (or other predicate stem) into a noun so particles and predicates can attach.

Before this, make sure you know: -아요 / -어요 , 을/를 , 이/가

How to form it

When Form Example
Verb / adjective / 이다 stem stem + -기 먹다 → 먹기 / 크다 → 크기 / 학생이다 → 학생이기
After -으시- / -었- / -겠- (dictionary allows) -으시기 / -었기 / -겠기 가시기 / 갔기 (advanced feel — learn plain stem first)
With particles 기가 / 기를 / 기로 … 먹기가 힘들어요 / 주문하기를 배워요

-기 is Korean’s plain way to turn a verb into a noun: 먹기, 주문하기, 기다리기.

You need that noun when the next word wants a thing, not a finished sentence — ordering is hard, I like speaking, we decided on going.

Forms

PieceNote
stem + -기No separate consonant/vowel split like -/-
+ particle기가, 기를, 기만, 기로…
Ending vs suffixProductive ending vs frozen nouns (보기)
한국어로 말하기가 어려워요. Speaking Korean is hard.
여기서 기다리기를 싫어해요. I don’t like waiting here.
주문하기 전에 메뉴를 봐요. I look at the menu before ordering.

Ending, not every word ending in

우리말샘 lists -기 as a nominalising ending and, separately, as a suffix that builds some nouns. Classroom focus is the ending: attach it when you productively need a noun. Do not analyse every dictionary noun in as a fresh grammar move.

Vs -는 것

PatternFeel
-기compact verb→noun
-는 것clause packaged with adnominal tense

Both can translate as English -ing. Korean still picks one. If you need fuller clause material, lean -는 것; if you need the bare action-as-noun, - is often enough.

Particles still matter

  • 기가 — subject (이/가): 먹기가 힘들어요
  • 기를 — object (을/를): 한국어 배우기를 시작했어요
  • Desire talk still often prefers -고 싶다 (-고 싶다) over calqued 기를 원하다 in beginner speech

Same unit as -을게

Ordering dialogues use -을게 / -ㄹ게 to close a promise (주문할게요) and - when the action itself is the noun under discussion.

Do not confuse it with

Common questions

Can I replace every -는 것 with -?

No. They overlap in translation but choose different partners. Learn common frames (기가 어렵다, 기를 좋아하다) rather than swapping blindly.

Does drop before -?

Plain education examples keep : 살다살기. Do not apply the -니까 ㄹ-drop rule here.

Is - the same as -아서?

No. [[g:aseo-eoseo]] links cause or sequence between clauses. - builds a noun; it does not mean 'because'.

How does this relate to -기로 하다?

[[g:giro-hada]] is - plus plus 하다 — a decision pattern built on this noun form.
