-은 채로

-은 채로: While Still… — Leaving That State As-Is

Connective with bound noun 채: do the next action while leaving the prior state as it is.

Before this, make sure you know: -은 , -아요 / -어요

How to form it

When Form Example
Verb + -(으)ㄴ 채로 -(으)ㄴ 채로 신은 채로 / 입은 채로 / 켠 채로
Without 로 -(으)ㄴ 채 숙인 채 / 진 채

-(으)ㄴ 채로 means while still… / leaving it in the state it already has.

Why this is hard

It freezes a prior state during the next action: shoes on, lights on, eyes closed. Learners confuse it with simultaneous -으면서 or result -아/어 있다. The noun 채 is the ‘as-is’ shell.

What it does

You keep a state unchanged while something else happens.

신발을 신은 채로 들어왔어요.
눈을 감은 채로 들었어요.
앉은 채로 대답했어요.
불을 켠 채로 잤어요.

Forms

Past adnominal -(으)ㄴ + 채로.

When not to use it

Do not use it for changing states mid-action. Do not write 신다 채로 without the adnominal. Do not treat it as plain ‘while’ without the as-is freeze.

Neighbours — and why they differ

FormWhy it is not this slot
-으면서While doing — overlap, not frozen state.
-어 있다Resulting state — different shape.
-는 가운데In the midst of — situation, not 채.

Safety and manners talk love this frame — don’t walk in with shoes on, etc. Keep the frozen state explicit.

Classroom examples should keep the meaning concrete: one clear scene beats three vague glosses. If a neighbour form already says the same thing more lightly, prefer the lighter tool unless register demands this one.

Ask: am I keeping a prior state as-is during the next act? If yes, -(으)ㄴ 채로. If both actions simply overlap, -으면서 may fit.

Do not confuse it with

Quick check

No sign-up, no score saved — just see if it stuck.

1. You walked in without taking your shoes off — the wearing state stayed intact through the next action. Which line?

2. Which line uses the forms-table shape 켠 채로?

3. Same stem 입다 — they really kept the clothes on while sleeping, not a fake display of being dressed. Which line?

Common questions

Dictionary?

의존명사 채: already-so state left intact — 옷을 입은 채로. Not vegetable 채, not 체/척 pretend.

채 vs 체?

Huge trap. 못 본 체/척 = pretend not to see. 신은 채 = still wearing.

Without 로?

숙인 채 말했다 — also common.

Vs -으면서?

-(으)면서 is simultaneous doing. 채로 freezes a completed state.
