-는데도
-는데도: Even Though — Soft Contrast After A Clause
Connective: background/fact clause + 도 — even though that is so…
How to form it
| When | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Verb + -는데도 | -는데도 | 가는데도 / 오는데도 / 아는데도 |
| Adjective + -ㄴ데도 | -(으)ㄴ데도 | 바쁜데도 / 좋은데도 |
-는데도 means even though… after a -는데-style clause — soft contrast that still grants the background fact.
Build: -는데 / -(으)ㄴ데 + 도. So 바쁜데도, 좋은데도, 가는데도. It is one of three common “even though” tools learners meet with -지만 and -어도 — and the softness comes from the -는데 background, not from a magic new stem ending.
Why this is hard
English even though maps onto several Korean forms. Learners pick -지만 for every contrast, or -어도 for every concession, and then hear -는데도 in speech and wonder what was missing. What was missing is the runway: -는데 first sets a situation as given, then 도 says “even so.”
Forms also trip people. Verbs often show -는데도; many adjectives show -(으)ㄴ데도 (좋은데도, 바쁜데도). Past sits inside the -는데 family (바빴는데도). Treating it as one frozen spelling fails on real stems.
What it does
You grant a background fact and still assert the opposite outcome — often in spoken, soft-feeling contrast.
바쁜데도 도와줬어요.
아는데도 모르는 척했어요.
비가 오는데도 나갔어요.
좋은데도 안 샀어요.
어제 전화했는데도 답이 없어요.
Forms worth saying out loud
| Kind | Shape | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Action / 있다·없다 style | -는데도 | 가는데도, 있는데도 |
| Many adjectives | -(으)ㄴ데도 | 바쁜데도, 좋은데도 |
| Past inside the clause | -었는데도 | 바빴는데도, 갔는데도 |
Speech loves this pattern; careful writing may still prefer heavier 불구하고 frames when the register climbs.
When not to use it
Do not reach for it when you only need blunt but — -지만 is the straight contrast tool.
Do not use it when you mean hypothetical even if on a bare stem — that is often -어도 (바빠도), not a -는데 background.
Do not pad a formal despite-essay with casual -는데도 if the page wants -는데도 불구하고 weight.
Do not drop 도 and think bare -는데 already means even though. -는데 alone is background; 도 adds the “even so.”
Neighbours — and why they differ (all three say “even though”)
| Form | Why it is not this slot |
|---|---|
| -지만 | Straight but / although — contrast is the point; less “background granted” softness. |
| -어도 | Even if/though on the stem — concession without building a -는데 scene first. |
| -는데도 불구하고 | Same even-though idea with formal despite weight. |
| -는데 | Background only — no 도, so not even though by itself. |
Ask: am I granting a -는데 background and saying ‘even so’? If yes, -는데도. If you want blunt but, use -지만. If you want stem concession even if, use -어도. If you need heavy formal despite, add 불구하고.

1. They were busy, and you still want soft spoken even-though credit for the help they gave.

2. Rain is falling, yet they headed out — which verb-shaped line matches this page’s -는데도 seat?

3. You want blunt contrast with -지만, not this page’s softer background-plus-도 feel.

Common questions
Build?
-는데 / -(으)ㄴ데 + 도. Even though the background fact holds.
Vs -지만?
Both contrast. -는데도 often keeps spoken soft feel.
Vs -는데도 불구하고?
-는데도 불구하고 adds formal weight with 불구하고.
Vs -어도?
-어도 is ‘even if/though’ on the stem. -는데도 rides a -는데 clause.
