-는 가운데

-는 가운데: In The Midst Of — While That Situation Continues

Pattern 가운데 「005」 after adnominal: inside the range where that event/state is taking place.

Before this, make sure you know: -는 동시에 , -아요 / -어요

How to form it

When Form Example
Verb + -는 가운데 -는 가운데 회의하는 가운데 / 이야기하는 가운데
Adjective / past + -(으)ㄴ 가운데 -(으)ㄴ 가운데 바쁜 가운데 / 끝난 가운데

-는 가운데 means in the midst of — while that situation continues.

Why this is hard

It frames a background situation for what happens inside it. Learners swap it with every -으면서 or -는 동안. 가운데 leans to ‘in the middle of a scene,’ often slightly formal or narrative.

What it does

You set an ongoing situation as the container for another event.

회의하는 가운데 연락이 왔어요.
비가 오는 가운데 경기가 이어졌어요.
웃는 가운데 눈물이 났어요.
기다리는 가운데 소식을 들었어요.

Forms

Adnominal -는 + 가운데.

When not to use it

Do not use it for every casual ‘while’. Do not confuse it with frozen -(으)ㄴ 채로. Do not drop the adnominal.

Neighbours — and why they differ

FormWhy it is not this slot
-으면서While doing — lighter spoken overlap.
-는 동안During — duration focus.
-은 채로While still in a frozen state.

News and storytelling like this container. Keep the outer situation and the inner event both clear.

Classroom examples should keep the meaning concrete: one clear scene beats three vague glosses. If a neighbour form already says the same thing more lightly, prefer the lighter tool unless register demands this one.

Ask: am I placing an event inside an ongoing scene? If yes, -는 가운데. If you need light ‘while,’ -으면서 may be enough.

Do not confuse it with
