-으면 몰라도
-으면 몰라도: Only If… — Otherwise Don’t Count On It
Connective: the following would hold only under that (often unreal) condition — otherwise not.
How to form it
| When | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Verb / adjective + -(으)면 몰라도 | -(으)면 몰라도 | 있으면 몰라도 / 알면 몰라도 / 부자면 몰라도 |
-으면 몰라도 means only if… — the following holds only under that condition (often unreal or opposite flavour).
Why this is hard
It denies the main claim unless the if-clause is true — and often implies it is not. Learners read bare -으면 and miss the ‘except in that case’ twist with 몰라도.
What it does
You say Y might hold only if X — and usually signal that X is not the case.
백만장자면 몰라도 난 못 사요.
시간이 많으면 몰라도 지금은 어려워요.
전문가면 몰라도 저는 몰라요.
어제면 몰라도 오늘은 바빠요.
Forms
-으면 몰라도 + main clause that refuses or limits.
When not to use it
Do not use it as plain if. Do not drop 몰라도 and keep only -으면. Do not use it when you truly affirm the if-clause as real.
Neighbours — and why they differ
| Form | Why it is not this slot |
|---|---|
| -으면 | Plain if — no ‘only if / except’ twist. |
| -어도 | Even if — concession, opposite direction. |
| -을 테면 | If you’re going to — plan condition. |
Refusal and modest self-limits love this frame. Keep the contrast with reality audible.
Classroom examples should keep the meaning concrete: one clear scene beats three vague glosses. If a neighbour form already says the same thing more lightly, prefer the lighter tool unless register demands this one.
Ask: am I saying ‘only if X — and probably not’? If yes, -으면 몰라도. If you need plain if, use -으면.
