-는다는
-는다는: The… That Says / That Will — Framing a Claim
Expression: the… that says / that will — framing a quoted claim as a noun.
How to form it
| When | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Action claim as modifier | -는다는 N | 간다는 말 / 한다는 소리 |
| Adjective / 이다 family nearby | -다는 N | 좋다는 평 / 학생이라는 사실 |
-는다는 frames a claim as a modifier — the talk that… / the claim that….
Not bare -는다고 quotation ending. The claim sits before a noun.
Why this is hard
Quotation tools look alike. -는다고 해요 reports. -는다는 말 packages the claim as something named — rumour, statement, story.
What it does
간다는 말
온다는 소식
한다는 계획
좋다는 평
Front = claim. Back = noun that holds it (말, 소식, 계획…).
Forms
-는다는 N; descriptive -다는 N in the same family.
가다 → 간다는 말
하다 → 한다는 소리
좋다 → 좋다는 평
When not to use it
Do not use it as bare reported speech ending alone.
Do not confuse with intention -는다고.
Do not invent it without a following noun.
