-을 바에
-을 바에: Given You Are Doing That — Better Alternative
Expression: given you are (doing) that — the situation of that act (often with a better alternative).
How to form it
| When | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Prospective adnominal + 바에 | -(으)ㄹ 바에 | 갈 바에 / 할 바에 / 먹을 바에 |
| With better alternative | …바에 … | 갈 바에 집에서 쉴래요 |
-을 바에 takes the act as a given case — often then picks a better alternative.
Not soft if. Not clock time.
Why this is hard
It looks near -(으)면 and -을 때. The package says: if we’re in the situation of doing that anyway…. 차라리 sequels are common classroom partners.
What it does
갈 바에 택시를 탈게요.
할 바에 제대로 해요.
먹을 바에 맛있는 걸 먹어요.
기다릴 바에 다음에 만나요.
Front = given act. Back = preferred path.
Forms
-(으)ㄹ 바에.
가다 → 갈 바에
하다 → 할 바에
먹다 → 먹을 바에
When not to use it
Do not use it as soft if — -(으)면.
Do not use it as pure time — -을 때.
Do not invent bare 바에 on nouns without the adnominal.
Neighbours — and why they differ
| Form | Why it is not this slot |
|---|---|
| -(으)면 | Broad if. |
| -을 때 | Time-when. |
| -어도 | Even-if concession. |
Ask: is this act the given case for a better choice? If yes, -을 바에. If soft if, -면.
If English wants if I’m going to do it anyway, I’d rather…, you are here.
