-는다고1

-는다고① (의도): Intending To… — Linker, Not Quote

Connective: intending to… / claiming one will… — intention as a linker.

Before this, make sure you know: -으려고 / -려고 , -아요 / -어요

How to form it

When Form Example
Action verb -는다고 / -ㄴ다고 간다고 / 먹는다고 / 한다고
Intention + sequel -는다고 … 간다고 짐을 싸요 / 한다고 준비해요

This -는다고① is the intention linker — meaning to…, I….

It shares a shape with junggeup -는다고 quotation. Do not merge them. Curriculum sense here is 의도, not reported speech.

Why this is hard

Same letters. Different job. Learners who drilled 간다고 해요 (someone said…) will misread 간다고 일찍 나왔어요 as a quote. Here the first clause is what you set out to do; the second is what follows from that plan.

PLAN rule: 각각 쓴다 — quotation vs intention get separate pages even when the surface looks identical.

What it does

간다고 짐을 싸요.
만난다고 자리를 비워요.
한다고 자료를 모아요.
잔다고 불을 꺼요.

Front = intended act (often framed as what you claim you will do). Back = preparation or next move.

Forms

Action verbs: -는다고 / -ㄴ다고 as a connective hinge into the sequel — not necessarily followed by 하다 “say.”

가다 → 간다고 …
하다 → 한다고 …
먹다 → 먹는다고 …

When not to use it

Do not use this page when you mean they said that… — that is -는다고 quotation.

Do not force it where plain -(으)려고 is the natural café purpose marker.

Do not invent adjective quotation forms and call them this intention linker.

Neighbours — and why they differ

FormWhy it is not this slot
-는다고 (quote)Reports speech.
-(으)려고Everyday purpose / plan.
-자니③Intention that often hits a snag.

Ask: am I chaining my intention into the next clause? If yes, this -는다고. If quoting, stay on the quotation page.

Do not confuse it with

Quick check

No sign-up, no score saved — just see if it stuck.

1. You are packing because you intend to leave — chain that plan into the next clause, not report what someone said.

2. Same packing scene, but the intended act is 먹다 — which line uses this page’s -는다고 hinge into getting ready?

3. You want everyday purpose with -(으)려고, not this curriculum intention-linker.

Common questions

Same spelling as quotation?

Yes — shape overlaps. Job does not. Quotation pages report speech; this page links intention.

Vs -자니③?

-자니③ often opens a plan that hits a snag. This -는다고 can lean toward ‘setting out to…’ without that snag being required.

How do I tell them apart?

Ask: am I reporting someone’s words, or chaining my own plan into the next clause? Report → quotation pages. Plan chain → this slot.

Register?

Appears in careful narration. Everyday purpose still loves -(으)려고.
