-이라야

-이라야: Only If It Is… — Required Noun

Connective/particle family: only if it is… — specifying that noun as the required one.

Before this, make sure you know: -으면 , 이다 , -아요 / -어요

How to form it

When Form Example
Noun with batchim N이라야 학생이라야 / 서울이라야
Noun without batchim N라야 나라야 / 친구라야

-이라야 (and 라야 after vowel-final nouns) names the required identity — only if it is….

Not a soft what-if. The noun is the gate: 학생이라야, 회원이어야 family neighbours exist, but this slot stays on the -이라야 restrictive package.

Why this is hard

It sits near -면, -어야, and 이라면. Learners mash if tools. -이라야 is eligibility: that noun is required, or the sequel does not hold.

What it does

학생이라야 들어가요.
그 날이라야 가능해요.
진짜라야 믿어요.
친구라야 말해 줘요.

Front = required noun. Back = what that unlocks.

Forms

Batchim N이라야; no batchim N라야.

When not to use it

Do not use it for soft hypothetical if — -(으)면 / 이라면.

Do not use it as predicate must alone — -어야.

Do not paste it onto every noun as decoration.

Neighbours — and why they differ

FormWhy it is not this slot
-(으)면Broad if/when.
이라면Stressed noun hinge — hypothetical colour.
-어야Must / need on predicates.

Ask: is this noun the required identity? If yes, -이라야. If soft if, stay with -면.

Do not confuse it with

Quick check

No sign-up, no score saved — just see if it stuck.

1. Entry is restricted to people with student status. Which sentence makes that identity a requirement?

2. Which line gives a broad condition rather than saying that Friday is the only acceptable day?

3. The requirement is completing an action, not possessing a noun identity. Which sentence therefore uses -어야 rather than -이라야?
