The Whirlwind of Chaos: The Texture of -는 통에

Some days don’t fall apart because of a single clean accident; they dissolve because of pure, noisy pandemonium: crying babies, ringing phones, frantic coworkers shouting questions, or deafening construction jackhammers. Korean captures this whirlwind of distraction through -는 통에:

“고객들의 빗발치는 환불 요청 전화가 쏟아지는 통에 하루 종일 밥 한 끼도 못 먹었습니다.”
(In the chaotic flood of incessant customer refund calls pouring in, I couldn’t even eat a single meal all day.)

Under the National Institute of Korean Language (우리말샘):

통 「012」 [의존 명사]: (주로 ‘-은/는 통에’ 구성으로 쓰여) 어떤 일이 벌어지는 형편이나 판국. (주로 소란스럽거나 번잡하여 곤란을 겪는 상황에 쓰임).

1. Sensory Chaos: The Hallmark of -는 통에

[Ambient Disorder / Noise / Clamor] ──────→ -는 통에 ──────→ [Frustrated / Exhausted Outcome]
"아이들이 떠들고 우는" "통에" "정신을 하나도 차릴 수 없었다."

2. The Great Negative Causality Triumvirate

  • -는 바람에: Sudden external incident derailing plans (지하철이 고장 나는 바람에).
  • -는 탓에: Culpable defect or blameworthy flaw (게으름을 피운 탓에).
  • -는 통에: Noisy, bustling, chaotic commotion overwhelming the senses (사람들이 한꺼번에 몰려드는 통에).

3. Everyday Urban Commotion and Digital Overload

In modern lifestyle essays, -는 통에 captures sensory and informational saturation:

  • “시도 때도 없이 울려 대는 알림 메시지 통에 온전히 생각에 잠길 시간조차 빼앗겼다.” (In the frantic mess of notifications buzzing incessantly day and night, even the time to reflect in silence was stolen away).
  • The phrase expresses the profound cognitive fatigue of the modern digital condition.

Common questions

Can -는 통에 take positive results?

Never! The result in the main clause is always a frustrated state, exhaustion, failure to concentrate, or a ruined plan: '집중이 안 된다', '잠을 못 잤다', '정신이 하나도 없었다'.

What spacing is required?

Space before 통: '떠드는 V 통에', '비가 쏟아지는 V 통에'.

Is -는 통에 formal or informal?

It is predominantly conversational and narrative. In high-level formal legal documents, Koreans replace it with '-으로 인하여' or '-는 사태로 말미암아'.

Can it follow adjectives?

Strictly speaking, it attaches to action verbs (동사) because it requires active commotion. However, stative adjectives converted to verbs with -어지다 or sensory adjectives like '시끄럽다' occasionally appear in speech: '소리가 너무 시끄러운 통에'.
