-는 바람에

-는 바람에: Because Of — Unexpected Cause, Messy Result

Because of [an incident] — dependent noun 바람 in -는 바람에.

Before this, make sure you know: -아서 / -어서 , -아요 / -어요

How to form it

When Form Example
Verb + -는 바람에 -는 바람에 막히는 바람에 / 고장 나는 바람에

-는 바람에 packages an incident as cause: something happened, and that is why the (often messy) result followed.

Gloss: unexpected cause with an unwanted result. 우리말샘 바람 「016」: dependent noun in -는 바람에 marking the grounds/cause of what follows. Weather 바람 is a different word sense. “Unexpected / unwanted” is strong teaching colour — common in drills, not a dictionary absolute.

What it does — blame the incident

길이 막히는 바람에 늦었어요.
버스가 고장 나는 바람에 걸어갔어요.
비가 오는 바람에 경기가 취소됐어요.
알람이 안 울리는 바람에 잠을 더 잤어요.

When to use

Use -는 바람에 when narrating a disruption that led to trouble (or at least an unplanned outcome).

Prefer -아서/어서 for calm, expected reasons (피곤해서 일찍 잤어요).

Practice rule: if the cause feels like “then this happened on me,” -는 바람에 fits.
