Try as You Might — Then the Negative

Shortened -으려고 하여야 — attempt framed, usually followed by inability or failure.

How to form it

When Form Example
Batchim stem -
Open stem -

-으려야 is the shortened -으려고 하여야 — even if one tries to….

Gloss: no matter how you try — and why it ends in a negative. Classroom lines almost always continue into 못하다 / 안 되다 / 없다 territory.

Try — then fail

Illness and frustration talk: intention is there; the result is not.

Common questions

Dictionary?

Open-stem -려야 is the classroom match.

Must the next clause be negative?

Curriculum gloss expects can’t / won’t work. Follow textbook lines; do not invent free positive uses.

Sleep tip?

자려야 잠이 안 와요 — try as I might to sleep, I can’t.

vs -어도?

eodo is general concession. -으려야 keeps the try-to intention visible.
