-으리오
-으리오: How Could It…? — Rhetorical Pushback
Ending: how could it…? — rhetorical pushback, often with lament.
How to form it
| When | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Batchim stems | -으리오 | 먹으리오 / 있으리오 |
| Vowel / ㄹ stems | -리오 | 가리오 / 하리오 / 알리오 |
-으리오 (-리오) pushes back — how could it…?
Literary rhetorical coat. Often lament or challenge. Not the resolve seat of -으리라.
Why this is hard
-리라 / -리오 look like twins. Learners merge them into “old future.” -으리오 is a speech act: challenge, disbelief, lament — not a calm vow.
What it does
어찌 가리오?
그런 일을 하리오?
내가 그걸 모르리오?
쉽게 끝나리오?
The ending expects no plain factual answer — it presses.
Forms
Batchim -으리오; vowel / ㄹ -리오.
먹다 → 먹으리오
가다 → 가리오
하다 → 하리오
When not to use it
Do not use it as calm resolve — -으리라.
Do not use it as café future — -겠-.
Do not drop it into business email for decoration.
Neighbours — and why they differ
| Form | Why it is not this slot |
|---|---|
| -으리라 | Shall / will resolve or speculation. |
| -겠- | Living future/guess. |
| -으오 | Old polite statement/question coat. |
Ask: am I pushing back rhetorically? If yes, -으리오. If vowing, -으리라.
If the English in your head is how could…? rather than I shall…, you are on this page.
