Korean Workplace Email Guide: Structure, Key Phrases, and Etiquette

A Korean office mail is not hard because the vocabulary is rare. It is hard because four layers sit on top of each other, and English only sees “formal.”

The sentences below are invented classroom mail, not a real workplace leak.

The subject line is already grammar

내일 회의 안건에 관하여

에 관하여 marks the matter under discussion. Spoken Korean would say 내일 회의요 or 회의 건으로요. The National Institute treats 대하여 and 관하여 as close: both can take a topic. 관하여 is the written “about this file and what hangs off it.” 대한 is warmer when the object is a person you face — 이웃에 대한 관심, not 이웃에 관한 관심.

If a mail opens with 관하여, answer in the same layer. 그거요? is a register break.

Before the step: 기에 앞서

회의를 시작하기에 앞서 자료를 첨부합니다.
Before we start the meeting, I am attaching the file.

-기에 앞서 names the step that has not happened yet, then puts the preparation in front of it. Everyday Korean has -기 전에. Minutes, kickoff slides, and careful mail prefer 앞서. The meaning is not fancier. The seat is.

Do not stack both: 시작하기 전에 앞서 is noise.

Exactly as requested: 는 대로

요청하신 대로 일정을 수정했습니다.
I revised the schedule as you requested.

-는 대로 (here -신 대로 after the honorific) is a receipt. It says: I followed the pattern you named. It is not a new proposal. If you want to propose, you need a different verb — 제안드립니다, 다른 시간도 가능할까요.

Learners hear 대로 and think “whatever.” In mail it means the opposite: no extras.

Purpose in document clothes: 고자

일정에 관하여 공유하고자 합니다.
I am writing in order to share the schedule.

-고자 is purpose for speeches and documents. The spoken twin is -으려고 / -려고 해요. 공유하려고요 is what you say at the desk. 공유하고자 합니다 is what you write when the mail might be forwarded to a director.

-고자 하다 is a set. You will see 알리고자 합니다, 안내드리고자 합니다, 협조를 구하고자 합니다. Same skeleton.

Which layer answers which

You receivedYou can send
해요체 from a teammate해요체 back
합니다체 from a client합니다체 back
관하여 / 고자 / 기에 앞서stay in that written set
카톡 반말do not answer with 고자

The same fact can climb three rungs. Invented, same content:

내일 회의요. 자료 보냈어요.
내일 회의 자료 보내 드렸어요.
내일 회의 안건에 관하여 자료를 송부드리고자 합니다.

Nothing in the third line is more true. It is only more forwardable. If a director might see the mail, Korean picks the third rung. If only the person at the next desk will see it, the first rung is the human one.

잘 부탁드립니다 can close a request that has no single verb. A file to check is cleaner as 검토 부탁드립니다. The grammar of 부탁 is a different lesson; the rule here is do not mix a chat ending with a notice ending in the same paragraph.

Open the last three mails in your Korean inbox. Highlight 관하여, 앞서, 대로, 고자. That sorting is the whole lesson.

Common questions

Is 에 관하여 just a fancy 에 대해?

Close, not identical. The National Institute notes both can mark a topic, but 관하여 leans toward 'the matter under discussion and what sits around it.' 대한 loves the person or thing you face: 너에 대한 사랑, not 너에 관한 사랑.

Can I write 해요체 to my manager?

Many teams do, once the tone is set. First mail to a client, a professor, or an unknown desk still wants 합니다체. Match the last mail you received.

Where does 잘 부탁드립니다 go?

Often the last line, when you are asking them to look after the request as a whole. A single concrete ask is clearer as 확인해 주세요 or 검토 부탁드립니다.

Should I copy -고자 into chat?

Not into 카톡 with a peer. 공유하려고요 / 공유할게요 is the human pair. Keep -고자 for mail, notices, and slides.
