Korean News Register: 알려졌다, 밝혔다, 보인다
Korean articles lean on a small set of formal endings. Learn what 알려졌다 and 밝혔다 signal — including when good papers try not to overuse them.
If you can parse a Korean news lead, daily posts on this site get easier overnight. The grammar is not exotic. It is a closed set of formal moves used again and again.
This is not a translation of any one article. It is a map of the register — including the parts good editors tell reporters to use less.
The four verbs that run the wire
You will meet these stems constantly in politics and court copy:
| Form | Job |
|---|---|
| ~고 밝혔다 | X disclosed / made clear that… |
| ~고 전했다 | X conveyed that… |
| ~으로 알려졌다 | it has become known that… |
| ~으로 보인다 | it appears that… |
밝혔다 and 전했다 usually keep a human or institutional subject on stage. 알려졌다 and 보인다 can hide the subject inside the grammar.
Taking a model lead apart
Invented shell, real shape:
경찰은 용의자를 특정했다고 밝혔다.
gyeongchareneun yonguijareul teukjeonghaetdago balkyeotda.
Police said they have identified a suspect.
- 경찰은 — topic/subject
- 특정했다고 — 특정하다 + past + quotative -다고
- 밝혔다 — 밝히다 in plain past (written news style)
Attribution is clear: the police are the ones disclosing.
Now the foggy cousin:
용의자가 특정된 것으로 알려졌다.
A suspect has reportedly been identified.
- 것으로 — “as a thing / to the effect that”
- 알려졌다 — 알려지다 + 었 + plain ending
Who told the paper? The sentence does not say. That is exactly why the form is useful in hard beats — and why it is abused.
What working journalists say about it
In a Hankyoreh column on “soggy” versus “crisp” copy, journalism standards editor Lee Bong-hyeon calls out anonymous 관계자 sourcing and foggy predicates like 알려졌다 / 전해졌다 as habits that blur fact and soft opinion. The same piece notes the paper’s own reporting guideline: avoid constructions that hide whose judgement is on the page, and prefer dry verbs such as 말했다, 발표했다, 밝혔다 when quoting people.
A Hankyung language column by Hong Seong-ho separately criticises padded news diction like 애도의 뜻을 밝혔다 where 애도했다 would be cleaner — another reminder that news Korean has house-style fights, not only learner grammar charts.
Read those columns as Korean about Korean. Steal their ear, not their sentences.
How to read faster
- Find the attribution verb first (밝혔다 / 전했다 / 주장했다…).
- Ask whether the subject is named.
- Treat 알려졌다 / 전해졌다 / 보인다 as flags: knowledge claim or interpretation, not courtroom proof.
- Ignore decorative nouns piled onto the verb (입장을 밝혔다 → often just 밝혔다).
Spoken 해요체 almost never carries the body of a news story. Quotes inside the story may; the wrapper stays written and formal, cousin to 합니다체 announcements.
Practice
Open any Korean news site. Highlight every 밝혔다 / 알려졌다 / 보인다 on the front page. Sort them into named source versus source missing. That sorting skill is the whole lesson.

1. What does ~것으로 알려졌다 usually signal to a careful reader?

2. In 경찰은 수사를 이어 가겠다고 밝혔다, who is responsible for the claim?

3. Why might a newsroom style guide prefer 말했다 / 밝혔다 over 주장했다 in straight news?

Common questions
Should learners copy 알려졌다 in their own Korean writing?
For news reading, yes — recognise it. For your own factual writing, prefer naming who said what. Even Korean newsrooms debate overusing 알려졌다.
Is ~으로 보인다 a fact?
No. It marks interpretation: 'appears to be…'. Read it as analysis unless the article pins it to a named analyst.
Does news Korean use 해요체?
Body copy is overwhelmingly plain written style and formal endings, not casual 해요체. Interviews may show spoken quotes inside that frame.
Where can I see journalists criticising these habits?
One clear public example is a Hankyoreh journalism column that flags anonymous sources and foggy verbs like 알려졌다/전해졌다 as trust problems — linked in the sources below.
