Korean Interview Answers: 겠습니다 vs 을 것입니다
Interview Korean rewards 하겠습니다 and punishes slang. -겠- is resolve in the room. -을 것입니다 sounds like a forecast about someone else.
A Korean interview is a register test as much as a content test. The room is listening for 합니다체, for humility, and for whether you can leave group-chat Korean at the door.
The answers below are invented classroom lines. They are not a real company’s script.
Close with resolve, not a forecast
부족한 점은 배우겠습니다.
I will work on what I still lack.
-겠- here is intention from this seat, now. The wrapper is 합니다체. Together they bow and promise.
The cousin learners drag in from textbooks is -을 것입니다:
제가 잘할 것입니다.
The grammar of 것 is not the notice-board command -을 것, and it is not a Sejong future slot. In an interview it often lands as a prediction about a third party — a weather sentence about yourself. The room wanted a person, not a forecast.
| In the room | Stance |
|---|---|
| 하겠습니다 | I take this on, from now |
| 할 것입니다 | it will be the case that… |
| 할게요 | promise to a friend — -을게 |
할게요 is grammatical and warm. It is the wrong layer for a first interview.
Humility has a shape
Korean interview talk likes a small dip before the claim.
아직 경험이 짧습니다. 그래서 더 배우겠습니다.
The first sentence is not self-hate. It keeps 제가 최고입니다 off the table. English “I am the best fit” can sound like 제가 잘할 것입니다 — a forecast with no dip.
Talk about the interviewer with -(으)시- when they are the subject:
질문해 주셔서 감사합니다.
That 시 raises their asking, not you. 제가 가세요 is the classic reverse error. Do not honorific your own verbs.
Slang is not extra colour. It is a wrong room.
Invented, all the same meaning:
어려워도 끝까지 해 보겠습니다.
존버할게요.
ㅋㅋ 어떻게든 됨.
The first is interview Korean. The second is a meme noun plus a friend promise. The third is a comment. A scorer does not need to hate slang to mark the last two down. They mark layer.
If a word lives on this site as slang, leave it in that lesson. The interview is not a place to prove you know 킹받다.
What to practise out loud
- One strength in 합니다체, one sentence.
- One gap + 배우겠습니다.
- One thanks with 주셔서.
If you need a plan that is already decided, say it as a fact, not a forecast: 내일부터 출근합니다, or 수습 기간 동안 배우겠습니다. Keep -을 것입니다 for a claim about the market or the calendar, not about your character.
Do not invent a company, a score, or a trend. Practise the frames. Swap in your real job words later.
Common questions
Is 할 것입니다 always wrong?
No. It is fine for a detached forecast: 내년에는 수요가 늘 것입니다. About your own effort in the room, 하겠습니다 is the human close.
Can I use 해요체 if the interviewer does?
Follow the room, but do not go below 해요체 on a first meeting. Opening in 반말 is not friendly. It is a miss.
Where does slang belong?
In the lesson that teaches that word, and in chat with people who already use it. Not in the first five minutes with a stranger who is scoring you.
Is 알겠습니다 a future tense?
No. It is a fixed acknowledgement: I have understood. Learn it as a chunk.
