Jal Butakdeurimnida Meaning: When and How to Use 잘 부탁드립니다

Koreans often use this phrase when joining a company, meeting a team, starting a class, or beginning a new project. English has no single fixed equivalent, so the best translation changes with the situation.

Translations offered for it include “nice to meet you,” “I look forward to working with you,” and “please take care of me.” All three are approximations, and none is the thing.

What it actually says

잘 — well 부탁 — a request, something asked as a favour 드리다 — to give, humbly

Together: I humbly make the request that you treat me well.

It is not a greeting. It is not thanks. It is a request for goodwill, made in advance, about a relationship that has not happened yet.

English has no slot for that. The closest we get is the tone of “I’m in your hands,” which sounds theatrical in a way this does not.

The humble direction

Korean honorifics run two ways, and this phrase uses the less obvious one.

• Raising them — -(으)시- and honorific vocabulary: 계시다, 드시다, 말씀하시다
• Lowering yourself — humble vocabulary: 드리다, 뵙다, 여쭙다

드리다 is the humble counterpart of 주다 (to give). Using it here does not elevate the listener grammatically; it puts you lower, which produces the same social effect by a different route.

부탁드립니다	humble, warmer — the default in writing and upward

-아/어 주다 is the other request machinery you will know, and the difference is instructive: -아/어 주세요 asks for a specific action. 부탁드립니다 asks for nothing specific at all — just that you be looked after.

Where it lands

Introductions. The standard sequence:

안녕하세요. 처음 뵙겠습니다. 김민수입니다. 잘 부탁드립니다.
Hello. Pleased to meet you. I’m Kim Minsu. Please treat me well.

김민수입니다 names you with 이다. 처음 뵙겠습니다 uses 뵙다, the humble form of 보다, and -겠- for the meeting you are in as you say it. Same self-lowering machinery as 드리다.

First day at work. Almost obligatory, usually with a small bow.

Ending an email with a request. Very common:

확인 부탁드립니다. — Please check this.
검토 후 회신 부탁드립니다. — Please review and reply.

Here it is doing something closer to “I would be grateful.”

Handing over a project. 잘 부탁드립니다 as you pass it on.

A trap worth naming: same age does not mean casual on day one. A new colleague your own age still gets 잘 부탁드립니다 at the first introduction. The casual form arrives later, once you actually know each other.

Why it is worth learning early

Most set phrases are conveniences. This one is different, because not saying it is noticeable.

Introduce yourself to a Korean team, finish with your name, and stop — and there will be a small gap where something was supposed to go. Nobody will mention it. But the sentence was expected, and its absence registers.

Four syllables of effort, and you sound like someone who understands how the room works.
