Korean Weather Small Talk: 춥네요 (Chumneyo), 비 와요 (Bi wayo)

Hallway weather, not the forecast board. 날씨 좋네요, 추워요, 비 와요 — chat stance. -겠- and 강수확률 stay on the forecast lesson.

Korean Weather Small Talk: 춥네요 (Chumneyo), 비 와요 (Bi wayo)

Not the board

The forecast lesson already owns the screen: -겠-, 합니다체, 기온, 강수확률, 미세먼지. Do not copy those frames into a hallway. This page is what you say to a person while you wait for a lift.

You do not need today’s numbers, and you should not invent any. If you need numbers, open a live forecast. Here you only need a stance you can say without looking at a phone.

Noticing, then the body

Someone holds the door. You feel the air.

오늘 날씨 좋네요.
oneul nalssi johneyo — The weather is nice today.

좋네요 marks that you just noticed it, out loud. It is not an outlook. Do not swap it for 맑겠습니다. That ending belongs to the board.

오늘은 좀 추워요. 은 sets today as the topic, often against yesterday or against the room you just left. 춥다 is ㅂ-irregular: ㅂ drops and the 해요체 is 추워요. 덥다 is 더워요. The regular-looking 춥어요 is the mistake this page exists to stop.

안 춥지 않아요? is a tangle. The clean check is 춥지 않아요?

지 않아요 asks, softly, whether the cold is not the case — or, in this shape, invites agreement: it is cold, isn’t it? 덥지 않아요? works the same on a hot day.

Rain as talk, not as a percentage

비 와요.
bi wayo — It’s raining. / Looks like rain.

That is settled chat. It is not 비가 오겠습니다, and it is not 강수확률. If someone asks 우산 있어요?, they are solving the next two minutes, not reading a chart.

내일은 비 온대요 is hearsay from a person or a clip. Still chat. If you want the official frame, leave this page and open the forecast one.

바람 많이 불어요 names wind without a knot. 흐려요 names a grey sky. You can point at the window. You do not need 하늘상태.

One split: the other lesson teaches you to read a board without inventing a Tuesday. This lesson teaches you to answer a human who just said 날씨 좋다.

Common questions

Is this the same as reading a Korean forecast?

No. [How to read a Korean weather forecast](/posts/korean-weather-forecast/) owns -겠-, 합니다체, 기온, 강수확률, and 미세먼지 labels. This page owns what you say to a person at the door.

비 와요 or 비가 와요?

Both. 비가 와요 keeps the subject particle. 비 와요 is the chat cut. Neither is 비가 오겠습니다.

How do I offer an umbrella?

우산 있어요? or 우산 필요해요? If you are handing yours over, 이거 쓰세요. You are not reading a percentage.

Can I ask 오늘 날씨 어때요?

Yes. That is a chat question. The answer you want is 추워요, 더워요, 비 와요 — not a copied 오겠습니다 line unless you are actually quoting a board.
