-네 / -네요
-네: Noticing Something Out Loud
Noticing / realising something as you speak — mild surprise or recognition, often half to yourself.
How to form it
| When | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Verb / adjective stem | stem + -네 | 오다 → 오네 / 크다 → 크네 |
| Polite spoken | -네요 | 오네요 / 많네요 |
| With past / -겠- (dictionary allows) | -었네 / -겠네 | 왔네 / 오겠네 |
-네 is the ending for I’m noticing this as I say it.
비가 너무 많이 오네요 — you are not forecasting; you are registering the rain out loud. 우리말샘 separates a plain narrative -네 from a noticing/exclamatory -네; Sejong’s weather unit wants the second job.
Forms
| Shape | Use |
|---|---|
| -네 | intimate / self-talk noticing |
| -네요 | everyday polite noticing |
비가 많이 오네요. Oh — it’s raining a lot.
사람이 많네. There are a lot of people (I notice).
오늘 춥네요. It’s cold today (registering it).
Not -겠-
Same unit, different job:
| Ending | Job |
|---|---|
| -겠- -겠- | guess, intention, offer |
| -네 | just-noticed description |
*비가 오겠어요 and 비가 오네요 can both appear in weather talk — do not treat them as twins.
Soft, not theatrical
English speakers overplay wow! -네 is often quiet recognition. Tone does the rest.

Common questions
Is -네 only surprise?
Surprise is common, but the core is noticing or recognising something as you speak — including calm realisation.
Dictionary senses?
우리말샘 lists a plain narrative -네 and a noticing/exclamatory -네 used in intimate speech or self-talk. Beginner weather lines sit closer to the noticing sense.
-네 vs -잖아요?
[[g:janayo]] assumes shared knowledge ('you know…'). -네 is fresh registration, not 'as we both already know.'
Can it follow -었- or -겠-?
The dictionary allows those combinations. This lesson focuses on present noticing (오네요) first.
