-으려고 vs -으러: Intend, or Go In Order To

You have a plan, and you have a door.

영화를 보려고 해요.
yeonghwareul boryeogo haeyo — I intend to watch a film.

으려고 names the intention. You can say it on the sofa. No motion is required.

Swap for the form that needs a trip.

영화를 보러 가요.
yeonghwareul boreo gayo — I’m going in order to watch a film.

으러 wants 가다, 오다, 다니다 after it. The purpose is the going. 영화를 보러 해요 is the failed line. 하다 is not a motion verb here. It is not a softer 보려고 해요.

Bread, same cut

빵을 먹으려고 해요 — you mean to eat. Still at the table, or still deciding.

빵을 먹으러 가요 — you are going (to a shop, a kitchen) in order to eat.

Learners paste English “in order to” onto both. Korean splits the jobs. A cafe you already know can take 으러: 커피 마시러 가요. Sitting down and announcing a plan takes 으려고: 커피 마시려고 해요.

먹으러 하려고 가요 stacks both. That is not extra clear. That is two forms doing one job twice.

Do not steal 아서

봐서 가세요 is a different error. -아서 cannot sit in front of a command, and it is not purpose. 보니까 가세요 is a reason-plus-command, another page.

One test. Are you naming a plan with no trip? 으려고. Are you going or coming in order to do it? 으러. If you only remember one failed line, remember 보러 해요 said from the sofa. That seat belongs to 보려고 해요. 친구를 만나러 왔어요 is a coming-purpose line, same family as 가요. 친구를 만나려고 해요 can stay in the room with no trip. A shop already on this site can take 으러: 사러 가요. A plan with no walk stays 사려고 해요. Do not leave thinking both are fine. The English in order to will try to sell you that lie.
