-는다 뿐이지
-는다 뿐이지: Only That… — Limiting the Claim
Connective -는다 뿐이지: concede only that much — the sequel usually denies a stronger claim.
How to form it
| When | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Plain statement + 뿐이지 | -는다 뿐이지 / -다 뿐이지 | 안다 뿐이지 / 간다 뿐이지 |
| Adjective / copula | -을 뿐이지 / -일 뿐이지 | 예쁠 뿐이지 / 학생일 뿐이지 |
-는다 뿐이지 limits the claim — only that much.
Then the sequel usually blocks a stronger reading.
Why this is hard
-을 뿐이다 and -을뿐더러 sit nearby. Learners hear only and stop. -는다 뿐이지 is only X — and not the bigger Y.
What it does
You grant a thin fact, then refuse the upgrade.
안다 뿐이지 잘하지는 않아요.
간다 뿐이지 일찍 가지는 않아요.
예쁘다 뿐이지 친절하지는 않아요.
학생일 뿐이지 전문가는 아니에요.
Forms
알다 → 안다 뿐이지
가다 → 간다 뿐이지
예쁘다 → 예쁘다 뿐이지
학생이다 → 학생일 뿐이지
When not to use it
Do not end with 뿐이지 if you only need a closed only — -을 뿐이다 may fit.
Do not use it to pile on top of that — that is -을뿐더러.
Do not drop the contrast sequel when correction is the point.
Neighbours — and why they differ
| Form | Why it is not this slot |
|---|---|
| 뿐 | Bound noun only in other packages. |
| -을뿐더러 | Not only A but also B. |
| -을 뿐이다 | Closed is only…. |
