-던 차에

-던 차에: Just When… — Mid-Course Timing

Bound noun 차 after -던/-으려던: just when that course was underway — then something else hits.

Before this, make sure you know: -던 , -아요 / -어요

How to form it

When Form Example
Past progressive adnominal -던 차에 말하던 차에 / 나가던 차에
Intention brink -(으)려던 차에 가려던 차에 / 사려던 차에

-던 차에 parks you at the underway moment — just when….

우리말샘 차 (의존명사 · 때·참). Not the vehicle 車.

Why this is hard

English when also covers -을 때, -는 중, -으려던 참. Learners paste one. -던 차에 wants the mid-course seat, then often a coinciding sequel.

What it does

Something was in progress (or about to start); then another fact arrives.

나가려던 차에 비가 왔어요.
말하던 차에 그 사람이 들어왔어요.
사려던 차에 품절이래요.
전화하던 차에 배터리가 나갔어요.

Forms

나가다 → 나가던 차에 / 나가려던 차에
말하다 → 말하던 차에
사다 → 사려던 차에

When not to use it

Do not use it for bare calendar when.

Do not drop the sequel if coincidence is the point.

Do not confuse it with -은 채로 — that marks a state left as-is.

Neighbours — and why they differ

FormWhy it is not this slot
-던Past progressive modifier alone.
-으려던 참이다Intention-at-brink as a state package.
-을 때Broad when.

Ask: am I seating the underway juncture for what hits next? If yes, -던 차에.

Do not confuse it with

Quick check

No sign-up, no score saved — just see if it stuck.

1. You were mid-sentence when that person walked in — the underway moment, then the coincidence. Which line?

2. You were about to leave when rain hit — intention-brink shape from the forms table. Which line?

3. Rain hit just as you were about to leave — you need the coincidence sequel, not a brink-as-state package. Which line?
