-을뿐더러
-을뿐더러: Not Only — Stacking Another Point
Connective: the prior fact is not the end — something further is added.
How to form it
| When | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Stem with batchim (not ㄹ) | -을뿐더러 | 먹을뿐더러 / 믿을뿐더러 |
| Vowel / ㄹ stem | -ㄹ뿐더러 | 갈뿐더러 / 살뿐더러 |
| Adjective / past | -을뿐더러 / -ㄴ뿐더러 | 예쁠뿐더러 / 바쁠뿐더러 |
-을뿐더러 / -ㄹ뿐더러 means not only that — there is more.
우리말샘 -을뿐더러 「001」: the prior matter does not stop there; something further is added. English not only… but also is close; the Korean ending is one connective, not a two-word frame you assemble.
Why this is hard
Learners already stack with -고. They then treat -을뿐더러 as a fancy twin and miss the weight: this form insists the first point is incomplete. Casual speech often stays with -고 or 게다가; essays and careful talk reach for -을뿐더러.
Allomorphs trip people next. Batchim (not ㄹ) wants -을뿐더러; vowel and ㄹ stems want -ㄹ뿐더러. *가을뿐더러 from 가다 is a classic false form.
What it does
You stack a second reason or quality on top of the first — praise, complaint, or argument.
\맛있을뿐더러 값도 싸요. 친절할뿐더러 실력이 좋아요. 바쁠뿐더러 피곤해요. 믿을뿐더러 의지할 수 있어요. \
Forms
| Environment | Form |
|---|---|
| Batchim (not ㄹ) | -을뿐더러 |
| Vowel / ㄹ | -ㄹ뿐더러 |
\갈뿐더러. ✅ *가을뿐더러. ❌ \
When not to use it
Do not swap it for every listing -고. Shopping lists and simple sequences want -고.
Do not force it into chatty texts where 게다가 or a second sentence already stacks cleanly — the ending can sound stiff.
Do not invent wrong allomorphs, and do not treat it as exclusive or (-거나 territory).
Neighbours — and why they differ
| Form | Why it is not this slot |
|---|---|
| -고 | Plain listing / sequence; lighter. |
| -는 데다가 | Stacking phrase with 데; similar job, different shape. |
| -지만 | Contrast, not addition. |
Ask: am I carefully stacking ‘not only A but also B’? If yes, -을뿐더러. If you only need light and, stay with -고.

2. Not only delicious — it is cheap too. Which line stacks the second point with this ending?

3. Not only kind — the skill is good too. You are stacking, not contrasting and not merely listing.
