-길래
-길래: So I Did — Spoken Reason You Acted On
Spoken connective: reason/grounds (colloquial for -기에), often leading into the speaker’s next action.
How to form it
| When | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Verb / adjective / 이다 | -길래 | 늦길래 / 좋길래 / 학생이길래 |
| After -었- | -었길래 | 봤길래 / 들었길래 |
-길래 marks a spoken reason you noticed and then acted on — so I did, since….
우리말샘 and classroom glosses treat it as a reason connective with a discovery → reaction feel. It is not a twin of every -으니까 or -아서/어서.
Why this is hard
English because / so covers cool logic and hot reaction alike. -길래 leans toward “I saw / heard / felt X, so I did Y” — often the speaker’s own next move. Learners paste it into essay cause chains where -기 때문에 or -아서/어서 fit better, and the page starts sounding chatty in the wrong genre.
It also sits near -기에 / reason frames. The classroom hook for -길래 is spoken noticing, not formal write-ups.
What it does
You report the cue that triggered your action.
비가 오길래 택시를 탔어요.
문이 열려 있길래 들어갔어요.
피곤해 보이길래 쉬라고 했어요.
값이 싸길래 두 개 샀어요.
The first clause is the noticed fact; the second is what you did with that information.
Forms
Stem + -길래 (classroom focus). Past and descriptive stems appear freely in speech: 왔길래, 비싸길래.
When not to use it
Do not use it as your default essay because. Formal cause wants other tools.
Do not treat it as identical to -으니까 when you are giving advice or commands — -으니까 has different command privileges; -길래 is mainly your own reaction story.
Do not invent a “길래 = therefore” abstract logic without a noticing flavour. If nothing was observed or felt, another reason ending is clearer.
Neighbours — and why they differ
| Form | Why it is not this slot |
|---|---|
| -으니까 | Broad spoken reason; can lead into commands. |
| -아서/어서 | Everyday so / because; not specifically “I noticed then acted.” |
| -기에 | Reason / basis; often cooler or more written than chatty -길래. |
Ask: did I notice something and then act? If yes, -길래. If you only need plain because, pick -아서/어서 or -으니까.
