대로

대로: In Accordance With — Conforming to Nouns and Templates

Particle and dependent noun construction attached directly to nouns: doing something strictly in accordance with an established rule, plan, standard, or order ('according to / as is / following N'); or secondarily, each element acting separately according to its own nature ('each in their own way').

Before this, make sure you know: -는 대로 , -아요 / -어요

How to form it

When Form Example
Direct attachment to established guideline/plan noun Noun + 대로 규칙대로 / 계획대로 / 매뉴얼대로
Attachment to sequential or organizational noun Noun + 대로 순서대로 / 번호대로 / 가나다순대로
Attachment to mental state or intention noun Noun + 대로 생각대로 / 뜻대로 / 마음대로
Secondary distributive/independent divergence ('each on their own') Noun + 은/는 + Noun + 대로 그는 그 사람대로 바쁘고, 나는 나대로 바쁘다

In Korean, 대로 is the foundational grammar point for expressing compliance, fidelity, and adherence to an existing standard. When attached directly to a noun, it signals that an action is being performed strictly in accordance with, following, or faithful to that noun’s model, plan, or specification.

Understanding Noun + 대로 requires mastering two complementary domains:

  1. The Primary Accordance Sense (Sense 「015」): “In accordance with / As dictated by N” — aligning actions with guidelines, sequence, or expectations (규칙대로, 계획대로).
  2. The Distributive Distinction Sense (Sense 「016」): “Each in their own right / Separately” — expressing that two distinct entities each maintain their own separate state or burden (나는 나대로, 너는 너대로).

1. What ‘Noun + 대로’ Actually Does

Following Established Templates & Standards

When attached to nouns representing systems, rules, manuals, or decisions, 대로 asserts that the agent is not improvising or altering the course. The template already exists, and the agent is simply executing it faithfully:

회사의 공식 규정대로 처리해 주시기 바랍니다.
Please process it strictly according to the company's official regulations.

레시피대로 정확하게 계량해서 넣었더니 맛이 일정해요.
Because I measured and added the ingredients exactly according to the recipe, the flavor is consistent.

의사 선생님의 지시대로 약을 하루 세 번 복용했습니다.
I took the medication three times a day as directed by the doctor.

Sequential and Structural Alignment

When attached to sorting or organizational nouns, 대로 establishes the progression method:

도서관 책들은 분류 번호대로 깔끔하게 정리되어 있습니다.
The library books are neatly organized according to their classification numbers.

지원자 명단에 적힌 접수 순서대로 면접을 진행하겠습니다.
We will conduct the interviews in the sequential order of application submission.

2. ‘Noun + 대로’ vs. ‘-는 대로’ (Sister Constructions)

One of the most frequent structural confusion points for learners is the relationship between bare nominal attachment (Noun + 대로) and verbal adnominal attachment (-는/ㄴ 대로):

CriterionNoun + 대로 (This Unit)-는/은/ㄴ 대로 (Adnominal Clause)
Syntactic ClassificationAuxiliary Particle (조사)Adnominal ending + Dependent Noun (의존명사)
Host Word ClassBare Noun (체언)Verb or Adjective Stem (용언)
Spacing RulesAttached directly without space (규칙대로)Separated by space after modifier (적힌 대로)
Primary MeaningFollowing an existing noun templateDoing as an action unfolds; OR “as soon as”
Example원칙대로 처리합시다.원칙에 명시된 대로 처리합시다.

Minimal Pair Comparison:

  • 계획대로 진행하세요: “Proceed according to the plan.” (The noun 계획 is the fixed template).
  • 계획한 대로 진행하세요: “Proceed as we have planned.” (The relative clause 계획한 modifies the dependent noun 대로).
  • 사무실에 도착하는 대로 보고하세요: “Report as soon as you arrive at the office.” (Here, -는 대로 carries the temporal immediacy sense of “the moment / as soon as”).

3. High-Frequency Spoken Collocations

In daily Korean conversation, certain Noun + 대로 combinations have crystallized into essential idiomatic phrases:

1. 생각대로 / 예상대로 (As Expected / As Thought)

  • 시험 결과가 내 예상대로 나왔다. (The exam results came out just as I expected.)
  • 일이 생각대로 쉽게 풀리지 않네요. (Things aren’t working out as easily as I thought.)

2. 뜻대로 / 마음대로 (As One Wishes / At One’s Will)

  • 인생이 언제나 우리 뜻대로만 되지는 않잖아요. (Life doesn’t always go according to our wishes, does it?)
  • 내 마음대로 결정할 수 있는 문제가 아닙니다. (This is not an issue I can decide however I please.)

3. 말대로 (As [Someone] Said)

  • 민수 씨 말대로 그 영화 정말 감동적이더군요. (Just as Minsu said, that movie was truly touching.)
  • 소문대로 그 식당은 줄이 엄청나게 길었어요. (True to the rumors, that restaurant had an enormous queue.)

4. The Distributive Sense: “A는 A대로, B는 B대로”

In advanced communication and TOPIK reading passages, 대로 frequently appears in a paired structure where a noun is repeated or balanced with another noun:

$$ \text{Noun}_1 \text{은/는 Noun}_1 \text{대로, Noun}_2 \text{은/는 Noun}_2 \text{대로}$$

This pattern highlights that each side has its own distinct circumstances, merits, or challenges, operating independently rather than being grouped together:

어른들은 어른들대로 스트레스가 있고, 아이들은 아이들대로 학업 부담이 크다.
Adults have their own stress in their own right, and children have heavy academic burdens in theirs.

클래식 음악은 클래식대로 우아한 매력이 있고, 대중가요는 대중가요대로 친근하다.
Classical music has its own elegant charm, while popular music has its own friendly appeal.

부모님께 의지하지 않고 우리는 우리대로 생활비를 벌어서 쓰기로 했다.
Without relying on our parents, we decided to earn and spend our living expenses on our own.

5. Sociolinguistic Etiquette & Caution Points

The Pragmatic Pitfall of “마음대로”

While 마음대로 literally means “according to one’s heart/mind,” using it casually in polite society requires extreme caution:

  • In English, saying “Feel free to do whatever you like!” sounds warm and hospitable.
  • In Korean, telling a client or senior “마음대로 하세요” often sounds dismissive, exasperated, or blunt (“Do whatever you want; I don’t care anymore”).
  • Polite Alternative for Workplace/Guests: Instead of 마음대로 하세요, use “편하신 대로 하세요” (Please do whatever is most comfortable for you) or “원하시는 방향으로 편하게 결정해 주십시오” (Please feel free to decide in the direction you desire).

Uncompromising Resistance: “법대로 합시다”

Saying “법대로 합시다!” (Let’s do it by the law!) in a negotiation is a direct declaration of conflict. It indicates that mutual personal courtesy and compromise are officially over, and the speaker is prepared to resolve the dispute through formal legal arbitration or lawsuits.

6. Summary Diagnostic Checklist

Before producing or interpreting 대로, verify:

  1. Is it attached directly to a noun without a space? If yes, it is the particle Noun+대로 (e.g. 계획대로, 규칙대로). If following a conjugated verb with a space, it is the adnominal construction -는/ㄴ 대로.
  2. Does it represent fidelity to a standard? It means “strictly following the template or plan without deviation.”
  3. Is it used in an ‘A는 A대로’ structure? It expresses independent, parallel coexistence (“each in its own way / separate from one another”).
  4. Are you offering freedom to a guest or senior? Use 편하신 대로 instead of the potentially abrasive 마음대로.

Common questions

Is '대로' in '계획대로' a particle or a noun?

In Korean lexicography, when 대로 attaches directly to a noun without a space (계획대로, 법대로, 순서대로), it is classified as an auxiliary particle (조사, Standard Korean Dictionary Sense 「015」). When it follows an adnominal verb form with a space (약속한 대로, 하는 대로), it functions syntactically as a bound dependent noun (의존명사, Sense 「001」).

Can '대로' be spaced away from the noun like '규칙 대로'?

No. Under official Korean orthography (띄어쓰기 규정), particles must be attached directly to the preceding noun without a space: 규칙대로 (O), 규칙 대로 (X); 생각대로 (O), 생각 대로 (X).

What is the difference between '법대로 하다' and '법에 따라 하다'?

Both mean 'according to the law'. However, 법에 따라(서) is an objective, formal, institutional phrase used in official documents, contracts, and news broadcasts. In contrast, 법대로 하다 is common in spoken conversation and frequently carries an uncompromising, aggressive tone ('Let's take this to court / We will go strictly by the book without showing any leniency').

Does Noun + 대로 ever mean 'as soon as' like verb -는 대로?

No. The temporal 'as soon as' meaning (도착하는 대로 연락해 = Contact me as soon as you arrive) only occurs when 대로 is preceded by a verb stem with the prospective/present adnominal marker -는. Noun + 대로 always denotes accordance ('following N') or independent status ('in one's own right').
