만큼

만큼: As Much As — The Particle on Nouns

Particle: to the degree / extent of the preceding noun.

Before this, make sure you know: 보다 , 만 , -아요 / -어요

How to form it

When Form Example
After a noun N만큼 형만큼 / 어제만큼 / 이만큼

만큼 after a noun marks matching degree: as much as N, to N’s extent.

Gloss: as much as — the particle version. 우리말샘 particle 만큼: degree/limit similar to what precedes. The clause pattern with dependent-noun 만큼 is the sister slot -는 만큼 — same family, different attachment.

What it does — match, don’t outrun

보다 often sets inequality (taller than). N만큼 sets a match (as tall as).

형만큼 키가 커요.
어제만큼 바쁘지는 않아요.
기대만큼 재미있어요.
이만큼만 주세요.

Cooking amounts make the matching feel concrete:

설탕은 이만큼 넣어요.
물도 컵만큼 부어요.
고기만큼 채소를 넣어요.

English “as much as” is usable. The trap is hearing 만 inside 만큼 and reading “only.”

Noun particle vs clause 만큼

ShapeJob
N만큼as much as the noun
-는/은 만큼as much as / to the extent that [clause]
친구만큼 잘해요. noun particle
연습하는 만큼 늘어요. clause (-는 만큼)

Do not glue bare 만큼 onto a dictionary-form verb and hope. Clauses need the adnominal first.

만큼 vs 만 vs 보다

FormJob
N만큼as much as N (match)
만only (limit)
보다than (compare, often unequal)
물만큼 마셔요. match the water amount
물만 마셔요. only water
커피보다 차를 마셔요. tea rather than / more than coffee

Dictionary also notes a limiting particle sense for 만큼 in some contexts. This slot’s teaching gloss is degree matching — keep “only” for 만 unless the limiting reading is unmistakable.

When to use — and when another tool is cleaner

Use N만큼 when a noun is the measuring stick (brother’s height, yesterday’s busyness, “this much” with a gesture).

Use -는 만큼 when the measuring stick is a whole clause.

Use 보다 when the point is difference, not match.

Practice rule: if you can replace the left side with a noun amount/standard and mean “to that degree,” N만큼 fits.

Do not confuse it with

Common questions

Is particle 만큼 the same word as dependent-noun 만큼?

Same spelling family; dictionary splits particle vs dependent noun. Attachment tells them apart.

vs 보다?

boda is than (often inequality). N만큼 is as much as (matching).

그만큼?

Fixed ‘that much’ — related family, useful to recognise.

Can 만큼 mean ‘only’?

A different particle sense limits to the preceding. This slot’s gloss is degree matching — keep ‘only’ for man unless context is clear.
