-는 만큼: As Much As — Proportion Between Clauses

Degree/proportion (or sometimes grounds) after a clause modifier + 만큼.

Before this, make sure you know: -은 , -아요 / -어요 , 보다

How to form it

When Form Example

-는 / -(으)ㄴ 만큼 matches degree across a clause: as much as you put in…. Gloss: proportion between two things.

우리말샘 만큼 as dependent noun after -은/-는/-을: quantity/degree corresponding to what precedes — and a separate grounds reading. Teaching gloss stays on proportion.

Learner traps

  1. Dropping the adnominal (*노력 만큼).
  2. Using 보다 when you mean matching degree, not superiority.
  3. Forcing a because translation on every 만큼.

Ask: am I matching how much of A to how much of B? If yes, -는 만큼. If the left side is only a noun, see 만큼.
