-은 다음에
-은 다음에: After — Plain Sequence
After [having done]… — sequence via adnominal + 다음 + 에.
How to form it
| When | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Verb past adnominal | -(으)ㄴ 다음에 | 먹은 다음에 / 한 다음에 / 씻은 다음에 |
-(으)ㄴ 다음에 is Korean’s calm after A, B — order without theatrical “and only once A is done.”
Gloss: after — plain sequence, with no emphasis on completion. 우리말샘 다음 after verb adnominal -ㄴ: after a process ends. The chunk adds 에.
What it does — timeline, not triumph
You are not celebrating that A finished. You are placing B on the calendar after A.
먹은 다음에 설거지해요.
수업 끝난 다음에 만나요.
씻은 다음에 화장해요.
예약한 다음에 확인 문자가 와요.
English “after” is fine. The trap is treating every after-clause as if it needed the heavier completion tool -고 나서.
Form that learners skip
The first verb must be the completed adnominal (-은/-ㄴ (completed modifier)):
간 다음에 OK
*가는 다음에 wrong for ‘after going’ in the basic drill
먹은 다음에 OK
*먹다 다음에 missing adnominal
This is the same modifier family as relative clauses — not a special “다음에 ending” glued to dictionary form.
Versus completion spotlight
| Form | Feel |
|---|---|
| -(으)ㄴ 다음에 | after (plain order) |
| -고 나서 | after finishing (completion is the point) |
| -은 후에 | after-family cousin (learn both in input) |
| -고 | and / then — looser |
넣고 나서 기다려요. finishing the putting-in matters
넣은 다음에 기다려요. plain after putting in
Recipes often prefer -고 나서 when a step must be fully done. Everyday plans often prefer -은 다음에 because the spotlight is the schedule, not the triumph of finishing.
When to use — and when not
Use it for routines, appointments, travel steps: after check-in, after class, after eating.
Prefer -고 나서 when instructions hinge on A being complete (seal the lid after turning off the heat).
Prefer -고 when you are only listing without a clear “after” hinge.
Practice rule: if English “after” is enough and nobody is stressing finished, -(으)ㄴ 다음에 is the default sequence chunk.
Do not confuse it with
