이며

이며: And — Written Noun Listing

Connective particle: join two or more nouns with equal standing.

Before this, make sure you know: 과/와, 하고 , (이)랑 , -아요 / -어요

How to form it

When Form Example
Noun with batchim N이며 산이며 / 강이며
Open noun N며 바다며 / 도시며

이며 / 며 links nouns as equals: A and B in a careful list.

Gloss: and — the written listing particle. 우리말샘 이며 「001」: after batchim nouns, join items with the same standing. 며 「001」: after open nouns. Spoken Korean usually reaches for 하고 or (이)랑. The particle’s job is simple; the skill is register — knowing when a brochure-style list is wanted and when it sounds costume-y in chat.

What it does — equal standing, not drama

You are not explaining cause or contrast. You are lining up nouns as co-members of a set — places, seasons, roles — with the same grammatical rank.

산이며 강이며 모두 가깝습니다.
도시며 시골이며 각자의 매력이 있어요.
봄이며 가을이며 여행하기 좋아요.

Guidebook rhythm: equal features side by side. Doubling …이며 …이며 is part of how the pattern feels in careful prose.

Mixing noun 며 with verb -며 is the lookalike trap: 산이며 lists a mountain; 높으며 connects a predicate.

When to use — and when chat wins

Use 이며 in formal writing and presentations that list places, seasons, roles.

Prefer 하고/(이)랑 in chat — 이며 in banmal about lunch plans sounds stiff.

Practice rule: if you are listing nouns in brochure tone, 이며/며 fits; if you are texting a friend, don’t.
