-도록: Steering Toward an Outcome — Purpose, Result, and Temporal Degree

Connective suffix and sentence ending: (1) indicating the intended purpose, targeted result, or manner of a following action ('so that / in order that / in a way that allows...'); (2) expressing temporal extent or degree reaching an extreme threshold ('until / to the point of...'); or (3) serving as a formal, polite directive or institutional command ('ensure that / see to it that...').

How to form it

When Form Example
Verb or Adjective stem in purpose/result connective Stem + -도록 알도록 / 들리도록 / 늦지 않도록
Preventative negative purpose ('so as not to...') Stem + -지 않도록 감기에 걸리지 않도록 / 실수하지 않도록
Temporal threshold or extreme degree ('until / to the point that') Time/Extreme Verb + -도록 밤이 새도록 / 목이 터지도록 / 뼈가 빠지도록
Institutional directive or polite authoritative command Stem + -도록 하세요 / -도록 하십시오 / -도록! 내일까지 제출하도록 하세요 / 착오 없도록 하십시오

The versatile suffix -도록 is one of the most productive connective and modal mechanisms in the Korean language. Rather than simply connecting two arbitrary events, -도록 establishes a targeted outcome: it frames Clause 1 as the specific condition, purpose, or threshold that the action in Clause 2 is deliberately engineered to achieve:

$$ \text{[Clause 1: Desired Outcome / Limit]} + \textbf{-도록}, \quad \text{[Clause 2: Steering Action / Directive]}$$

In modern Korean, -도록 is deployed across three foundational communicative functions:

  1. Targeted Purpose & Result (“So that / In such a way that…”): Aligning actions to ensure a specific state is reached.
  2. Preventative Caution (“So as not to…”): The ubiquitous formula -지 않도록 used in safety and workplace protocols.
  3. Temporal Extent & Hyperbolic Degree (“Until / To the point that…”): Describing an action pursued up to an extreme boundary.
  4. Institutional Directive & Command (“See to it that…”): The authoritative administrative ending -도록 하세요 / -도록 하십시오.

1. Usage 1: Targeted Purpose & Outcome Alignment (“So That…”)

When you want an audience, guest, or system to reach a specific state, you describe that state using -도록:

뒤에 앉은 분들까지 목소리가 잘 들릴 수 있도록 마이크 볼륨을 높였습니다.
I turned up the microphone volume so that my voice could be heard clearly even by those sitting in the back.

외국인 관광객들도 쉽게 길을 찾도록 지하철 안내 표지판을 다국어로 정비했습니다.
We renovated the subway guidance signs into multiple languages so that foreign tourists can find their way easily.

음식이 식지 않도록 보온 용기에 담아 배달해 드립니다.
We deliver the food in an insulated container so that it does not cool down.

2. Usage 2: The Preventative Formula (“-지 않도록”)

In the workplace, healthcare, and education, preventing mistakes and accidents is paramount. Korean almost exclusively relies on -지 않도록 for preventative directives:

개인 정보가 외부로 유출되지 않도록 각별히 보안에 신경 써 주십시오.
Please pay extraordinary attention to security so that personal information is not leaked outside.

회의 시간에 늦지 않도록 10분 전에 미리 회의실에 입장해 주시기 바랍니다.
Please enter the meeting room 10 minutes in advance so as not to be late for the meeting.

어린아이들이 미끄러져 다치지 않도록 바닥에 안전 매트를 깔았습니다.
We laid safety mats on the floor so that young children would not slip and injure themselves.

3. Usage 3: Temporal Extent and Extreme Degree (“Until…”)

When attached to verbs denoting time progression or extreme physical exertion, -도록 measures the extreme duration or intensity of an activity:

어제 프로젝트 기획안을 작성하느라 밤이 새도록 모니터 앞을 떠나지 못했다.
I was unable to leave the computer monitor all night long (until the night broke) while drafting the project proposal.

학창 시절에 우리는 목이 쉬도록 함께 노래를 부르며 응원하곤 했다.
During our school days, we used to cheer and sing together until our voices went hoarse.

신발 밑창이 다 닳도록 온 동네를 돌아다니며 집을 알아보았습니다.
I went around the entire neighborhood looking for a house until the soles of my shoes were completely worn down.

4. Usage 4: The Administrative Directive (“-도록 하세요 / -도록 하십시오”)

In corporate management, government offices, and academic institutions, issuing a blunt imperative like “제출해라!” or “제출하세요!” can sound either too aggressive or lacking in structural authority.

The composite formula -도록 하다 bridges this gap. It conveys: “See to it that this task is executed in accordance with official procedures.”

모든 팀원은 금요일 오후 5시까지 주간 업무 보고서를 제출하도록 하세요.
All team members, see to it that you submit your weekly work reports by 5 PM Friday.

Common questions

Can -도록 end a sentence as a direct command?

Yes! In official military orders, formal institutional notices, or executive directives, -도록! functions as an authoritative imperative: '각자 맡은 바 임무에 최선을 다하도록!' (Each person, see to it that you do your utmost in your assigned duty!). In polite business settings, it is softened to '-도록 하세요' or '-도록 하십시오'.

How does -도록 differ from adverbial -게?

-게 simply turns a predicate into a manner adverbial (e.g., 맛있게 먹다 = eat deliciously; 조용하게 말하다 = speak quietly). -도록 carries much stronger dynamic intention, targeted purpose, and steering toward a boundary (e.g., 모두가 들을 수 있도록 크게 말하다 = speak loudly so that everyone can hear).

Can -도록 take the past tense (-았/었도록)?

No! Because -도록 aims at a future targeted result or outcome that is yet to be realized, it cannot take the past tense infix -았/었- before the suffix (*갔도록 X, *먹었도록 X).

What particles can attach to -도록?

Emphatic and delimiter particles frequently attach to -도록: -도록은 (contrastive: 합격하도록은 해야지), -도록도 (even to the point that: 해가 뜨도록도 안 자다), and -도록까지 (extending up to the threshold of: 쓰러지도록까지 일했다).
