만 vs 밖에: Only Water, Opposite Polarity

Same limit, opposite verb. 물만 마셔요 is fine. 물밖에 안 마셔요 is the pair. 물밖에 마셔요 is the line that fails.

만 vs 밖에: Only Water, Opposite Polarity

One glass on the table

Someone offers juice at the table. You only want water, nothing else. Say the limit two ways, then watch one of them break.

물만 마셔요.
mulman masyeoyo — I only drink water.

만 limits the noun and keeps a positive verb. The sentence is complete.

Swap the limiter.

물밖에 안 마셔요.
mulbakke an masyeoyo — I drink nothing but water.

밖에 sets the same limit, then it requires a negative: 안, 못, or 없다. 물밖에 마셔요 is the wrong line. You cannot borrow 만’s polarity. That is the place a choice is wrong, not a place both are fine.

Money in the wallet

Same swap, now with 있다 / 없다.

천 원만 있어요 — you have only a thousand won, and the verb stays 있어요. 천 원밖에 없어요 — nothing but a thousand, and the verb must be 없어요. 천 원밖에 있어요 fails the same way 물밖에 마셔요 fails.

Do not invent a price you saw on a sign. Use whatever is in the example. The grammar does not care which number you plug in tomorrow at a real counter.

시간만 있어요 is the positive-only cousin: you have time, and that is all you can offer. 시간밖에 없어요 is the empty-wallet cousin. Pick the verb first, then pick the limiter that matches it.

만 안 is not the twin

물만 안 마셔요 looks like it contains both pieces. It does not mean 물밖에 안 마셔요. It means water is the exception you refuse. Juice might be fine.

Place 밖 is a third trap. 집 밖에 있어요 is outside. Noun 밖 plus 에. Particle 밖에 in this lesson is glued to the noun it limits: 물밖에, 천 원밖에.

Street and cafe pages already taught you other particles. This page has one test, and it is not a style choice. If the limiter is 밖에, look at the verb. If the verb is still positive, you said the broken sentence. Do not leave thinking 만 and 밖에 are interchangeable endings.

Common questions

Do 만 and 밖에 mean the same thing?

They limit the same noun. They do not take the same verb. 만 is comfortable with a positive. 밖에 is not. That is the whole split.

Place 밖에?

집 밖에 있어요 is outside the house. That 밖 is a noun, and 에 locates you. Particle 밖에 in 물밖에 안 마셔요 is a different item. Do not mix them.

Can I say 물만 안 마셔요?

Yes, but it flips the meaning: water is the one thing you do not drink. It is not a synonym of 물밖에 안 마셔요.

만 replaces 이/가 and 을/를?

Often. 물만 마셔요, not 물을만. 나만 왔어요. You do not stack 를 만 in ordinary speech.
