Korean Future Tense: -겠-, -(으)ㄹ 거예요, and Present
English has will. Korean spreads 'later' across -겠-, -(으)ㄹ 거예요, and plain present. Here is which stance each one takes — including why -(으)ㄹ 거예요 has no Sejong slot.
English learners arrive with one box labelled will. Korean does not keep that box.
Three ways to talk about later

-(으)ㄹ 거예요
Build it from the future modifier + 거예요:
가다 → 갈 거예요
먹다 → 먹을 거예요
하다 → 할 거예요This is the form most beginners should default to for personal plans.
저녁에 친구를 만날 거예요.
I’m going to meet a friend in the evening.

- outlook: 비가 오겠습니다 (often 합니다체 on boards)
- guess: 피곤하겠어요
- resolve: 열심히 하겠습니다
If you replace every plan with -겠-, you will sound like you are constantly predicting or swearing oaths.
Present for schedules
기차는 오전 9시에 출발해요.
The train leaves at 9 a.m.
Korean is comfortable putting fixed timetable facts in 해요체 present. English “leaves” does the same job; learners still over-insert will.
The curriculum footnote
-(으)ㄹ 거예요 is everywhere in beginner classrooms. On the King Sejong Institute grammar tables we mapped for this site, it does not get its own slot — which is why you will not see it as a separate card on the curriculum map. That is a table fact, not a claim that the form is rare.

Translate these with stance, not with a single English will:
- I’m meeting Mina tomorrow (plan).
- It looks like it will rain (outlook).
- The class starts at two (timetable).
If all three come out as -겠-, rewrite.
Common questions
So how many future tenses does Korean have?
It does not package 'future' as one tense. It spreads later-time meaning across endings and across plain present used for schedules.
Why doesn't -(으)ㄹ 거예요 appear as its own Sejong grammar id on this site?
The official tables we transcribed do not give it a separate slot, even though classrooms teach it early. The contrast lives here and on the -겠- page.
Can I use -겠- for every English will?
No. That produces stiff plans and missing guesses. Match stance: plan → -(으)ㄹ 거예요; guess/outlook → -겠-; timetable → present.
