다듬은 말 (Dadeumeun mal): 34 Loanwords Swapped for Plain Korean

Korea's language institute replaced 34 borrowed terms with plain Korean this September. 미들 마일 became 중간 물류. Here is the pattern behind 다듬은 말, and why you meet both forms.

다듬은 말 (Dadeumeun mal): 34 Loanwords Swapped for Plain Korean

Korea keeps an official list of words it would rather you not borrow, and it grew by 34 entries in mid-September 2026. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the National Institute of Korean Language announced plain-Korean replacements for borrowed terms that had been spreading through news copy and office talk. 미들 마일 is now officially 중간 물류. 에코 체임버 is 신념 증폭.

This is not a translation of any one article. It is the mechanism, the grammar frame the news comes wrapped in, and what a learner should do about it.

What happened

A committee called 새말모임 (saemalmoim, “new word group”) — reporters, academics, university students — drafts the candidate replacements. A 수용도 조사 (suyongdo josa, acceptability survey) then asks 3,000 people aged 15 and over a blunt question: would you use this? The final 34 were confirmed by the 국어심의회 (gugeo simuihoe), the standing Korean Language Council that signs off on this kind of decision, meeting for the third time in 2026.

The survey found the strongest appetite for replacing these four:

Borrowed termRefined formWanted replaced
미들 마일중간 물류73.8%
에코 체임버신념 증폭72.9%
밍글링어울림72.4%
힙 트레디션신감각 전통70.8%

A cluster of semiconductor vocabulary came through as well, which tells you where Korean business writing currently leaks English:

Borrowed termRefined form
팹 / 패브반도체 생산 공장
파운드리반도체 위탁 생산
팹리스 / 패블리스반도체 설계 전문 회사

Notice the trade being made. 파운드리 is four syllables and says nothing to a reader who does not already know. 반도체 위탁 생산 is nine syllables and says exactly what it is: semiconductors, contracted out, production. Length bought transparency.

The sentence this news is always written in

Every announcement of this kind uses the same skeleton, so learn it once:

국립국어원이 외래 용어 34개를 쉬운 우리말로 다듬었습니다.
Gungnip Gugeowoni oerae yongeo 34gaereul swiun urimallo dadeumeotseumnida.
The National Institute of Korean Language refined 34 borrowed terms into plain Korean.

  • 국립국어원이 — the institute, with 이 because the sentence answers who did this (이/가 vs 은/는)
  • 외래 용어 34개를 — the object, counted with the general counter 개
  • 쉬운 우리말로 — what it became, marked by (으)로
  • 다듬었습니다 — 다듬다 + past 었 + 습니다, the broadcast ending

That (으)로 is the load-bearing piece. English hears “into plain Korean” and reaches for 에. Korean uses 로 for the state something ends up in: A를 B로 다듬다, A를 B로 바꾸다, A를 B로 부르다. Once the frame is visible, every headline of this type reads itself.

The other frame worth stealing is the swap:

미들 마일이라고 하는 대신 중간 물류라고 하세요.
Instead of saying 미들 마일, say 중간 물류.

-는 대신 exchanges one action for another (-는 대신에). And note what you cannot build here. -아서/어서 never stands in front of a request or command, so there is no softer version of this sentence that runs …이라고 해서 …라고 하세요. That is not gentler. It is broken.

Why the list exists at all

Korean has absorbed foreign vocabulary for a century and nobody at the institute is trying to stop that. The stated target is narrower: terms that turn up in news stories and public notices before most readers have met them. An 외래 용어 that only finance desks understand, printed in an article about parcel delivery costs, is a comprehension problem wearing the costume of a style choice.

So the test being applied is not purity. It is whether someone reading the morning paper can tell what the sentence is about. That is why 에코 체임버 drew a 72.9% replace vote: it is a metaphor that has to be explained before it can explain anything, and 신념 증폭 — belief amplification — does the explaining inside the word.

What a learner should actually do

Two habits, and they point in opposite directions on purpose.

Recognise the borrowed form, because people say it. 파운드리 is what an engineer says in a meeting. No list changes that this month.

Read the refined form, because institutions write it. Government notices, broadsheet copy and textbook prose reach for the Sino-Korean compound. And those compounds are learnable in a way the loanwords are not: 위탁 (entrusting) and 생산 (production) are pieces you can reuse, and they will come back in twenty other words. 파운드리 teaches you nothing transferable.

The honest part: the institute publishes, it does not enforce. Some of these will be ordinary usage in five years and some will live only in press releases. Nobody in this story knows yet which is which.

Usage note: treating every refined form as everyday speech can backfire. 신념 증폭 is the official swap for 에코 체임버, but news and conversation still lean on the loanword — or on academic 반향실 효과. Learn both: recognise the refined form in notices, and do not force it into chat if the people around you still say the English.

Practice

Open any Korean news app and search 순화어 or 다듬은 말. Find one refinement from an earlier year, then search its borrowed term on its own. Count which one returns more recent articles. That ratio is the whole story of this policy, and you can measure it yourself in two minutes.

Common questions

Do I have to learn the refined words or the borrowed ones?

Both, in different places. Learn the borrowed form so you can follow a business conversation, and the refined form so you can follow a government notice or a broadsheet. Neither replaces the other in practice.

Is 다듬은 말 the same as 순화어?

Close enough to treat as one thing. 순화어 is the older term and still appears in news writing; 다듬은 말 is the plainer name the institute itself now uses.

Who decides these?

A committee called 새말모임 (saemalmoim, the new word group) drafts candidates, 3,000 people aged 15 and over are surveyed on whether they would use them, and the Korean Language Council — 국어심의회 (gugeo simuihoe) — confirms the final list.

Does anyone actually adopt them?

Some stick and some do not, and the institute cannot compel anyone. Watch which form your Korean news app prints — that is the real answer, word by word.
