-을 텐데
-을 텐데: It Probably Would, But…
Guess/expectation with 터, typically opening contrast, soft objection, or unfinished ‘but…’.
How to form it
| When | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Batchim verb/adjective | -을 텐데 | 많을 텐데 / 바쁠 텐데 |
| Vowel / ㄹ stem | -ㄹ 텐데 | 갈 텐데 / 할 텐데 |
| Past guess | -었을 텐데 | 갔을 텐데 / 알았을 텐데 |
| Polite trail-off | -을 텐데요 | 어려울 텐데요 |
-을 텐데 is a guess with a hinge. It says that’s probably how it is / would be — and Korean often uses that hinge to set up contrast, soft pushback, or a thank-you that acknowledges the cost.
우리말샘’s 터 after -을 covers expectation, conjecture, will. The spoken chunk -을 텐데 (from longer -을 터인데 territory) is what courses print. Treat it as a taught pattern; do not wait for a single neat headword.

Guess tools compared
| Form | Discourse feel |
|---|---|

| -겠- | will / conjecture on the verb |
| -는데 | background situation |
| -을 텐데 | guessed background, often with but-energy |

어려운데요. background with -는데
어렵지만 해 볼게요. explicit contrast
Not -을 테니
Same 터, different follow-through. -을 테니 often means since I will… (so you…). Keep that for -을 테니. This page is the probable… but / so… hinge.
Ask: am I guessing a situation as background, often with an implied but? If yes, -을 텐데. If you only need a gentle seems, -을 것 같다 may be enough.

Common questions
Is -을 텐데 one dictionary ending?
우리말샘 lists dependent noun 터 (expectation/guess after -을), not always the whole chunk as one headword. Courses teach -을 텐데 as a unit.
Can it end the sentence?
Yes — especially -을 텐데요 as a soft trail-off. It can also lead into a contrasting second clause.
vs -는데?
neunde1 supplies background too. -을 텐데 adds the 터 guess/expectation colour.
vs -지만?
jiman is an explicit but. -을 텐데 often lets the but hang unspoken or soft.
