-어야겠-: I'd Better — Deciding on the Spot

Before this, make sure you know: -어야 되다 , -겠- , -어야지 , -아요 / -어요

How to form it

When Form Example
Stem with ㅏ/ㅗ -아야겠- 가야겠어요 / 와야겠어요
Other stems -어야겠- 먹어야겠어요 / 해야겠어요
Common polite close -어야겠어요 확인해야겠어요

-아야겠- / -어야겠- is the I’d better… decision you make in the moment — check the board again, change the password, leave a comment before you forget.

It is a taught chunk, not a single 우리말샘 headword: connective/necessity -어야 plus pre-final -겠-, then an ending such as -어요.

Learner traps

  1. Writing 해야되겠겠어요 as a default double mark — learn the printed -어야겠- chunk first.
  2. Treating every English should as this form.
  3. Reading -겠- only as future guess and missing the decision colour.

Ask: am I deciding, right now, that this is what I’d better do? If yes, -어야겠-. If you are stating a standing rule, prefer -어야 되다.

Do not confuse it with

-어야 되다

have to, must — the obligation half of the 되다 family

-어야지

I really should — a resolution you make to yourself

-겠-

guessing, forecasting, or resolving — not just future

-고 싶다

want to — and why it cannot describe someone else
