What Does 무지출 챌린지 (Mujichul chaellinji) Mean in Korean?

A no-spend challenge: pause optional purchases, keep rent and bills, post the streak. Useful habit talk — ugly when it shames people who already have no spare cash.

A tiger locking the padlock on a safe

무지출 챌린지 is Korea’s name for a no-spend challenge.

What does mujichul challenge mean? For a set stretch of days, you try to spend nothing optional — then often post the proof.

The rule people actually use

Not “stop existing.” Coverage and how-tos usually allow:

  • rent, utilities, transit that gets you to work
  • groceries already planned / staples

And pause:

  • delivery treats, café runs, impulse shopping, random subscriptions

이번 주는 무지출 챌린지야. 배달은 참아야 돼.
This week is no-spend. I have to skip delivery.

-어야 되다 for the rule you impose on yourself. -을 수 있다 for what you can still resist:

커피는 참을 수 있어. — I can go without coffee.

Topic 은/는 contrasts categories: 필수 지출은 하고, 충동 구매는 안 해.

Who says it to whom

Self / challenge community: home base. Friends comparing streaks: fine. Stranger moralising someone’s takeout: ugly.

When not to use it

  • As a personality test for the poor.
  • As medical advice (skipping food until dizzy is not a flex).
  • In formal finance writing without defining the optional/essential split.

Learner move

Treat it as habit vocabulary tied to high prices and SNS accountability — cousin to 요노, not a joke insult. Use it about your own week, not someone else’s grocery bag.

Common questions

Is rent included?

Usually no. 'No spend' means optional consumption, not stopping survival costs.

Is it only Gen Z?

Marketing frames it that way, but anyone under price pressure joins versions of it.

Related to 요노?

Same thrift weather. 요노 is a buy-one philosophy; 무지출 is a timed freeze.

When is the word unkind?

When aimed at people who are already not spending because they cannot — challenge talk becomes moralising.
