-는걸

-는걸: Contrary to Expectation — Mild Pushback

Spoken ending: present fact differs from what was known or expected — light opposition or surprise.

Before this, make sure you know: -는데① , -아요 / -어요

How to form it

When Form Example
Verb / 있다·없다 -는걸 가는걸 / 있는걸 / 모르는걸
Common pushback 아닌걸 / …는걸 그게 아닌걸 / 벌써 온걸

-는걸 marks that the fact runs contrary to expectation — mild pushback or corrective realisation.

Classroom gloss: things differ from what was assumed. Soft spoken flavour, often with a sigh or smile — not a formal rebuttal essay tool.

Why this is hard

It looks like -는 걸 (nominal 것). Learners over-analyse the noun and miss the ending’s job: “actually… / you see…” against a prior assumption.

Compared with sharp challenge endings, -는걸 is milder. Compared with plain statements, it still signals a mismatch with what someone thought.

What it does

You correct or gently resist an assumption.

생각보다 어렵네, 공부할 게 많은걸.
그 사람 나쁜 사람 아니야. 친절한걸.
아직 멀었어. 길이 먼걸.
배고프지? — 아까 먹었는걸.

Forms

Adnominal + -걸 as the spoken ending chunk (classroom -는걸). Related shapes appear with adjectives (-ㄴ걸).

When not to use it

Do not use it as a stiff written counterargument — pick clearer contrast (-지만, -는 반면에).

Do not confuse every 는 걸 spelling with this ending; context decides noun vs ending.

Do not fire it upward as sarcasm; soft pushback can still sting with the wrong tone.
