-는 편이다

-는 편이다: Tends To Be — Softening a Judgment

Belongs roughly to a type or tendency — a hedged classification.

Before this, make sure you know: 이다 , -을 것 같다 , -아요 / -어요

How to form it

When Form Example
Verb (habitual/present) -는 편이다 일찍 자는 편이다 / 잘 먹는 편이다
Adjective / completed -(으)ㄴ 편이다 조용한 편이다 / 큰 편이다

-는 / -(으)ㄴ 편이다 softens a judgment into a tendency or type membership: I’m on the quiet side, tends to be good at….

우리말샘 편: mainly in -은/는 편이다, meaning roughly belonging to a category. That matches the classroom softener.

Learner traps

  1. *예쁜는 편 — wrong adnominal.
  2. Using 편이다 for a one-off event (어제 늦은 편이에요 when you mean a single late day — tendency colour fights you).
  3. Softening so hard the sentence says nothing.

Ask: am I classifying a tendency, not firing an absolute? If yes, -는 편이다. If you are guessing without classifying, check -을 것 같다.
