이나 / 나
이나: Or — Between Nouns
Particle: link nouns as alternatives — A or B — sometimes with a 'settling for' feel.
How to form it
| When | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Noun with batchim | N + 이나 | 물 → 물이나 / 집 → 집이나 |
| Noun without batchim | N + 나 | 커피 → 커피나 / 사과 → 사과나 |
| Settling / 'at least this' | N + 이나/나 | 물이나 마실래요 / 라면이나 먹자 |
이나 / 나 is or for nouns — and sometimes or, if that’s all we’ve got.
우리말샘 lists 이나 as a connective particle that links nouns so one of them is chosen, and separately as a particle for a choice that is not fully satisfying or is the minimum you’ll accept. Both show up in everyday speech; beginner housing and food talk uses both flavours.

Would you like coffee or tea?

|---|---|---|
| Plain alternative | A or B | 커피나 차 |
| Settling / at least | less-than-ideal pick | 라면이나 먹자 |
You do not need a special conjugation — context decides. If the speaker sounds resigned, you are hearing the second sense.

Common questions
이나 or 나?
Batchim noun → 이나 (집이나). Vowel-final noun → 나 (커피나). Same split pattern as 이/가 and 을/를.
Is it the same as 하고?
No. [[g:gwa-hago]] lists or accompanies (A and B). 이나/나 picks among options (A or B).
When is the 'settling' reading natural?
When the noun is a fallback: 라면이나 먹자 (let’s at least have ramyeon), 물이나 주세요. Tone and context carry it — not every 이나 is disappointed.
Can I use 이나 on verbs?
No. Verb alternatives take [[g:geona]] -거나. *가이나 와요 is not Korean.
