-을래 / -ㄹ래
-을래: Will You? / I Will — Close Intention
Marks the speaker's intention, or asks the listener's — casual to polite-해요, close relationships.
How to form it
| When | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Stem ends in a consonant (not ㄹ) | -을래 | 먹다 → 먹을래 / 앉다 → 앉을래 |
| Stem ends in a vowel or ㄹ | -ㄹ래 | 하다 → 할래 / 살다 → 살래 |
| Polite 해요 | -을래요 / -ㄹ래요 | 할래요? / 볼래요? |
-을래 is the ending for I’m going to… / will you…? when the relationship is close enough for that blunt will-check.
오늘 저녁에 뭐 할래요? is movie-and-plans Korean: what do you intend to do this evening?
Forms
| Stem | Shape |
|---|---|
| Consonant (not ㄹ) | -을래(요) — 먹을래, 먹을래요 |
| Vowel or ㄹ | -ㄹ래(요) — 할래, 할래요, 살래 |
영화 볼래요? Want to / shall we watch a movie?
나는 집에서 쉴래. I’ll rest at home. (casual)
커피 마실래요? Would you like coffee? / Will you have coffee?
Intention, not the same as desire
| Pattern | Job |
|---|---|
| -고 싶다 -고 싶다 | want to (inner desire) |
| -으려고 / -려고 -으려고 | intending to / in order to (connective) |
| -을래 | ending: my will, or asking yours |
You can want a film (-고 싶다) without locking a plan; 볼래요? moves toward a choice. You can mark aim mid-sentence with 보려고 (-으려고 / -려고) and still finish with a different ending.
Not every “shall we”
| Ending | Lean |
|---|---|
| -을까 -을까 | soft suggestion / wondering |
| -읍시다 -읍시다 | let’s (proposal) |
| -을래 | will / preference check |
*갈까요? and 갈래요? can both arrange an outing; the second presses intention harder and sits closer socially.
Not a promise-for-you
-을게 / -ㄹ게 (주문할게요) undertakes something toward the listener. -을래 is not that service promise; it is will on either side of the conversation.
Register
우리말샘 marks -을래 / -ㄹ래 for 해라 contexts. Classroom 할래요? adds 해요체 politeness — still warmer and more direct than formal planning language. With seniors or distant adults, soften or switch patterns.

Common questions
Is plain -을래 okay with strangers?
Dictionary places it in 해라-style speech. With people you are not close to, prefer -을래요 or a softer suggestion like [[g:eulkka]] / [[g:eupsida]].
Vs -을게?
[[g:eulge]] promises the listener what *you* will do for them (*제가 할게요*). -을래 is your will or their will — including *할래?* as a check.
Vs -을까요?
[[g:eulkka]] often floats a joint suggestion or wonder. -을래 is more about intention/preference on the table.
Vs -겠-?
[[g:get]] covers judgement and some offers in a different voice. -을래 stays in the intention/will lane for close talk.
