Forms

|---|---|
| ㅏ / ㅗ | -아도 되다 |
| Other | -어도 되다 |
| 하다 | -해도 되다 |
들어가도 돼요? May I come in?
여기서 사진 찍어도 돼요? May I take photos here?
네, 입어도 돼요. Yes, you may wear/try it.
May vs must
| Form | Meaning |
|---|---|
| -아/어도 되다 | may / it’s allowed |
| -어야 되다 -아/어야 되다 | must / have to |
*먹어도 돼요 ≠ 먹어야 돼요. English speakers mix can/have to; Korean keeps the endings distinct.
Bare -어도 without 되다 is a different job — concession (even if…). That connective is -아도 / -어도.
With -어 보다
Shop Korean loves the stack: 입어 봐도 돼요? = -어 보다 + permission. Learn the order: try-form first, then -아도 돼요.
Not bare ability
-을 수 있다 할 수 있어요 = I can (skill/possibility). 해도 돼요 = I’m allowed / it’s okay to do it.

Common questions
How do I say no / you mustn’t?
Common pairs are [[g:eumyeon-doeda|-(으)면 안 되다]] and -아서는 안 되다. Permission’s opposite is not 안 되어도 되다.
Is this the same as -을 수 있다?
No. [[g:eul-su-itda]] is ability / possibility. -어도 되다 is about being allowed.
가도 돼요? vs 가야 돼요?
가도 돼요? = may I go / is it okay if I go? 가야 돼요 = I have to go. Keep [[g:eoya-doeda]] separate.
Can adjectives take it?
Yes in principle (늦어도 돼요). Clothing-shop talk will mostly show action verbs.
